Show The Garfield County Insider Page 4 EXPLORE ESCALANTE IN OUR TOWN... BRYCE VALLEY AREA NEWS jana@exploreescalante.com Silver State Intl’ Rodeo Justin Porter’s first ride – 72 pts. He was first out of 11. Only two scored. This goes to press before his second ride Tues AM. Let’s hope. I’m getting questions about the Park Master Plan. What is it? Why do we need it? How can I get involved? The City will hire an engineer/architect to hold public hearings and get input on the three parcels the City owns and is required to maintain as parks. Because of deed conditions, or monies received from State Agencies, all three must remain parks. First, the Fire Station will take up a chunk of land at Town Center Park. The balance of the property will remain park with the Pavilion and Monument. The Little League Field is being moved to the High School. (I’ll tell you more about that shortly). What would you like to see happen with balance of the park area? Moms with young children would like to see a toddler’s park. Others want to see it left open with grass and trees. What’s your thoughts? Second, Mohr Christensen Park is in total disrepair. There have been several projects proposed and none have come to fruition. Some thought the lower section would be good for the Little League Field. Some thought an ATV staging area. Some thought the upper park should be repaired for the Hwy 12 traveler. What’s your thoughts? Lastly, the Rodeo Grounds are in declining condition. The grounds must be kept for equestrian uses, but is not precluded from some other uses. What about upgrading the arena? What about a 30 x 60 building that could be used as a community center? What about renting that facility for small conventions, 4-H events, community dinners, High School rodeo events? The rental fees could help pay for the maintenance. These are all thoughts that have been discussed. You’ll get your chance to bring up your ideas at the public meetings. Watch for them. So what about the Little League Field? There is an intergovernmental agreement between Escalante City and Garfield County School District that provides for the beginnings of a new park. The School District provides the 4 acres, the water and the mowing and watering service. The City gives $5,000 in water pipe and sprinklers of the original $7,500 requested. Garfield County Commissioners have committed the $2,500 balance. The fencing, etc. at Town Center Park will be moved to the High School by volunteers. And Munson Construction has donated the trenching service to bury the pipe. The water comes from the new well at the High School. Where it goes from here will be up to the volunteers and the parents of Little League. But it’s a great beginning to having all the parties working together. Speaking of Little League, Denise Olsen sent me this to include: “Escalante Little League would like to thank all the July 9, 2009 wonderful sponsors this year: Wells Fargo Bank, Trails End Real Estate and Skyhawk Helicopters. We greatly appreciate your support. Also, a ‘great job’ to all the young athletes and a big thanks to all the coaches and parent and volunteers. It’s been a great season.” We wish them well in their ongoing efforts to bring summer baseball tournaments to Escalante. Potato Valley Lions Club would like to thank all those that attended the July 4th dinner at the park. They served over 150 meals and made money for the new entrance signs for Escalante. They won’t have exact numbers until the final reports are in, but they’re pleased so many folks participated. Please mark your calendar for next year. Ideas abound for next year so reserve the entire weekend of July3/4 in Escalante. Here at the Gallery, we closed for the day, and will be closed the 25th as well. Tracy and I took a ride to Hells Backbone and were delighted to find Sego Lilies in bloom at the very top. There were very few cars and we stopped at Blue Spruce Campground on the way. Babbling Pine Creek was peaceful and hundreds of buttercups colored the stream bank. The last of the Pine Drops nestled near the giant Ponderosa’s. And Cattle called their young. Red Paintbrush, Firecracker Penstemon, and Pale Violet Lupine dressed up the roadsides. Even at 10,000 ft the sun shone bright and warm. The high mountain thermals provided a cool breeze and the cliff faces reflected the morning sun. A nice ride, indeed! More validation that the village is alive and well – and that it takes everyone in it to be a part; Good Going Doc! An email I received. “Please pass this along to the Desert Doctor. We’re the couple from Kentucky that needed the rear tire on the Kawa. Nomad. Thanks so much for your service, your wit, and your wonderful personality. You were the highlight of our trip! In the twinkling of merry blue eyes (yours to be exact) you turned a very concerning situation into a memorable moment in time. We loved Utah to begin with, and now know a real person in Utah to call friend. We’ll be back to Escalante as soon as possible! Thanks again for everything! God Bless! Bobby and Annette Riddle Lawrenceburg, KY” Until Next Week - - - July 13th will be the date to write on your calendar. It is the evening of the Fundraiser Dinner for the Robb Adkins family. We will begin serving at 6:00 P.M. and it will be at the Bryce Valley High School. If you would like to contribute an item to the Silent Auction it would be great. Come join us for a delicious meal and a good time with friends to help friends in our area, the Adkins Family. We welcome Julie Newland and her daughter, “Sam” (Samantha) to Tropic. Julie will be working at Bryce Canyon NP and is delighted to be here in our valley. She is excited to start working with the people at BCNP. In talking with Joey Shakespeare it was a surprise to learn that he and his wife Bree had a new little daughter, Emma. Need to get out more I guess. Tropic and Bryce Valley High School classes held a very enjoyable School Reunion. It was held on July 3rd at the new Heritage Center in Tropic Utah. It was the classes fo 1951 through 1954. There were 60 in attendance and everyone had a very enjoyable evening. Riley Roberts and Laura Pollock entertained everyone with their singing and guitars. They sang western songs that were popular through the High School years of these class members. Wynona Henderson was the Master of Ceremonies, paying tribute to class mates and teachers. Everyone sang the old Tropic High School Song and the new School song that was written and put to the music by Walt and Darlene Talbot when we moved in the new school back in 1955. Walt was the coach and Darlene was the music teacher. Everyone enjoyed going up to the school and Summer sizzles every Friday night Prime Rib Special $16.95 Choice of 2 sides + fresh homemade bread 5 pm to 9:30 pm Bryce Canyon Pines Hwy 12, Milepost 10 seeing the new Mustang Mascot at the entrance of our new school. Then we returned and Joe Ott led us in the Bryce Canyon farewell song, “Our Best to You” as friends and classmates parted, grateful that we could together again renewing old acquaintances and looking forward to seeing everyone in two years. The Ariel Fletcher Family Reunion was held last week with 75 people in attendance. They spent time visiting, going to the Mossy Cave to see the waterfall, to wade in the stream above Henrieville and played games at the Park. They held three different pot luck dinners and everyone enjoyed all the good food. It was lots of fun and there were a lot of people. Coming from Michigan was Mark and Mryna Christensen and 6 of their 7 children, and 22 of 28 grandchildren. From Mesa Arizona, Northern Utah, Missouri, Overton Nevada, and of course Southern Utah families gathered to enjoy each others company. Attending from our area was Larry and Glenna Fletcher and family, Alma and Anita Fletcher and family, John and Ramona Morreale and family and Danny Fletcher of Panguitch with two of his children and 3 grandchildren. It was a good time for everyone. The Fourth of July celebration was so nice. The food was good both Friday night and Saturday. On Friday evening the weekend events were started out with a delicious Pit Barbeque Beef dinner at the Tropic Town Park, hosted by the Tropic Volunteer Fire Department. The food was delicious and the company was great. Fun to visit with friends and neighbors and even the tourists that drop in to sample our home town fun. On Saturday there was a breakfast hosted by the Young Women organization, then a parade and races for the kids. After that the booths opened up and people had a great time going from place to place and visiting again with all their family and friends. There was a bake sale, a huge slide, a water dunk, and many more with Indian Tacos served for lunch along with your choice of hot dogs or hamburgers instead. Entertainment included Ken Hall singing, the Bar G. Wranglers, the cloggers of Kayce Brinkerhoff dancing class, and Shauna, Jacque, and Taylor Talbot. Great fun and a great big thank you to all the organizers and workers who put this together. Now it is time to concentrate on the 24th celebration to be held on the 25th of July in Tropic. The chairman is JoNeil Alvey with help from Dana Courtright. Promise to be great. Visiting in town were many people. A few that I was able to catch were Kevin Duncan of the Area 70’s, The Kortney Ahlstroms, Ty and Bonnie McArthur and children, Jocelyn Harris and her husband, Betsy Browning from Mountain Green along with her family, Mike Wintch and his wife and so many more that I couldn’t get their names. The Berkley Thompsons have been busy traveling this summer. They attended the 90th birthday bash for his mother up north and said it was great. Congratulations to Kasen Harris on becoming the President of the Teachers Quorum. He is the son of Ron and Susan Harris. Franz and Margaret Shakepsear attended her Nielson Family Reunion in Snowflake, Arizona for two days. They went to Lyman Lake for a picnic and then hiked to see some petroglyphs. Later, during their “teaching moments” from each family, Margaret taught them the Greek Alphabet in less than ten minutes! In the evening they spent dancing the “old time” dances with her sister calling the moves and then sang some old time songs which is a tradition in the family. The next day was individual competitions of basketball free throws, hitting softballs, throwing horseshoes, and playing croquet amongst the adults. Franz and Margaret tied 7-10 free throuws, tied on 1 point of 4 in horseshoes, and got different scores on the other two events and who do you think won? You’ll have to ask!! (Maybe Vicki will print it next week, HA!) The next week, since Franz was under the weather only Margaret went north to a niece’s wedding in the Salt Lake Temple and the wedding luncheon was held in Stockton, Utah (Vicki said she would look on a map to see where it is). The rains came and it was rush hour going to Ogden to stay with thier son David Shakespear and his family that night. The next morning, granddaughter Mickell, five years old, told Margaret that she didn’t need to go home and that puts a smile on every grandma’s face, yes? Then Margaret met up with daughter Shelly to go to the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple Open House which is in her temple district. Then her son John, his wife Alysha, and baby Makaylee got a short visit on her way home through Pleasant Grove. Whew! What a trip.
