A total of five teams competed Wednesday and Thursday at the Panguitch Triplex; Panguitch, Gunnison, Emery, and two teams from Richfield. Despite issuing 18 base on balls, Panguitch simply outlasted Richfield’s younger team 15 to 12, in the opener Wednesday. Sam Vasquez led the Bobcats attack with a single, double and a pair of runs batted in. Branden Birch scored three times and chipped in with two RBIs and two hits, and McKade Christenesn’s 2 for 3 day also accounted for a ribby. Jory Owens shut Richfield down in the final stanza with 1 run, to earn the save. The Bobcats second game versus Richfield’s 15 year olds ended up with Panguitch on the short end of a 12 to 2 score. Panguitch clashed with Emery Thursday in a do or die game, to stay alive for the finale. Down early 10 to 5, the Cats clawed their way back into contention only to fall short, 15 to 11. Once again the inability to throw strikes hurt the Cats, as the combined pitching gave up 11 base on balls, 7 of which came home to score. The result being the Bobcats being eliminated from the competition. PANGUITCH 10 AND UNDERS SPLIT IN OPENING POOL PLAY Friday pool play began for the Babe Ruth ten and under qualifer tournament, for the opportunity to play at Gunnison next week for the State championship, and the Panguitch squad, who have gone through the regular season without a single loss, took on the South Sevier Rams in the opener. Cole Greene started on the hill for the Bobcats allowing 3 runs, one of which was unearned, while striking out 7, and issuing just 1 base on balls. Trey Barney threw the last three innings, giving 1 run on just 2 hits, to seal the 9 to 4 victory. In the 4th inning, with Rams threatening to have a big inning, Dayson Houston turned in 3, run stopping, defensive gems in center field. With a run already in and a runner on first, the batter hit a single to center, Dayson fielded it cleanly and came up throwing, to nail the runner at third base, for the first out. After another base hit, the next batter lined one to center that Dayson flagged down for out number two. And then the next hitter drove the ball to center that looked like at least like a sure double, but Dayson made an outstanding running grab to smother the Rams attempt for a rally. Cole Greene and Dayson Houston led the Cats at the plate with perfect three for three days and a pair of runs batted in. Hunter Hatch and Kolby Taylor chipped in two for three and a run batted in. In the nightcap, versus Richfield, The Panguitch bats seemed to go into the deep freeze, as the Wildcat’s pitching racked up at least 8 Ks, dropping the Bobcats 6 to 3. Play resumes Monday, starting at 9:00 am.
