The purchase of the Twin- Cities Power System was completed June 30, 2009. “Garkane Energy already serves the area adjacent to Twin Cities (Centennial Park, AZ and Canebeds, AZ),” said Carl Albrecht, Garkane General Manager. “We’ve also entered into a partnership with South Central Communications to share a small Business Office in Hildale, UT.” Garkane has, on average, about 4.5 customers per mile of power line. Adding the concentrated customer base of Twin-Cities will provide for greater economies of scale. The acquisition will bring approximately 1,100 new accounts. Albrecht also explained that Garkane crews are already familiar with the system, having served it previously in the early 90s. Twin-Cities Power customers will become member/ owners of Garkane Energy cooperative with all the benefits of co-op membership. Consumers will see rate decreases from present rates. Transfer of ownership took place July 1, 2009. Twin Cities (Colorado City, AZ, and Hildale, UT) are located southwest of Kanab near the center of Utah’s scenic southwest and is located on the north portion of the Arizona border, approximately, 35 miles east of St. George, Utah. This acquisition is the second municipal power system purchased by Garkane. Kanab City’s power system was acquired in 2004. Garkane Energy will now serve more than 12,600 consumer/members in a wide service area that covers five national parks, several state parks, two national monuments, and several national forests. WEATHER THURSDAY ISOLATED T-STORMS HIGH: 84 LOW: 51 FRIDAY SUNNY THE BRYCE CANYON 9TH ANNUAL ASTRONOMY FESTIVAL In celebrating the International Year of Astronomy – the 4 00th Anniversary of the Telescope , Bryce Canyon National Park hosted its 9th Annual Astronomy Festival from June 17 - 20. John Stoke, keynote speaker, kicked-off the event with his presentation, “Hubble and Beyond, Far Beyond.” A former member of NASA’s Hubble mission, John discussed the very best of Hubble and a peek into the next generation of telescopes which will reveal intimate secrets of the universe invisible to Hubble, with a sharpness ten times higher. Following the indoor presentation, free stargazing with telescopes was provided, courtesy of the Salt Lake Astronomical Society and the “Dark Rangers” of Bryce Canyon. The keynote event was held in the Triple- C arena, in partnership with the town of Panguitch, UT. The re- maining three day’s events were held in the park. To promote the park’s stellar night skies, Superintendent Eddie Lopez, waived the park’s $25 entrance fee for all Utah state residents during the festival. Running from 8 PM to midnight, the Bryce Canyon Shuttle provided free rides to all venues. The 2009 Astronomy Festival featured daily model rocket building and launching workshops designed for families and kids. Other workshops included night sky planisphere demonstrations, viewing the sun with solar telescopes, and guided walks along a scale model of our solar system. Each night here were three concurrent evening presentations by the “Dark Rangers” and other guest speakers on astronomical topics related to stars and planets, nocturnal animals, Native Americans and astropho- tography. Each evening concluded with constellation talks and star viewing under Bryce Canyon’s famous dark skies. Thanks to the Salt Lake Astronomical Society, over 35 telescopes were set up and staffed for public viewing of the universe after the nightly presentations. OH, HOW SHE WAVES... The company that my dad, Harry Washburn, was the chaplain for had lost it’s regimental flag in the Battle of the Bulge when the Red Cross troops he was with were captured in Luxembourg. His commanding officer, Colonel Butler, asked Harry to find a flag for the services, but none was to be found, so he went to the nunnery there and they agreed to make one out of their blue serge habits and their white sheets, but they had no red fabric! Harry recalled that he had seen a Nazi banner hanging in the square so he took it down and took it to the nuns and they very reluctantly they agreed to use it. He assured them this was a sign of victory of good over evil. He paid them with a number of pounds of sugar and flower which they had not had for many years!
