Page 3 The Garfield County Insider IN OUR TOWN... Explore Escalante jana@exploreescalante.com Okay – did you figure out where Silver Reef is? It’s on the southwest edge of the Pine Valley Mountains and its original name was Bonanza Flats. By the 1880’s the reef was mined out and the settlement was abandoned. Hint – Washington County. Don’t forget to contact Clem and Joyce Griffin for your tickets to “From Silver Reef to Escalante”. The seats sell out. Larry Withers was kind enough to bring by some current information on the Regional Foresters’ contact information. The phone number I gave you was off their website. He dug around and came up with a better number - 801-6255605. Thanks Larry. Don’t forget Escalante Clean-up day on Saturday from 9-3. Lunch has been changed from 3PM to 1PM. Hopefully that will give LDS members time to participate and still make it to the first session for General Conference. Many thanks to Escalante Outfitters for donating ice cream, to Jerry & Monica Taylor for donating the hotdogs, and to Escalante City for donating the soft drinks. Desert Dr. reports he’s met with the Dutch and French Tour masters. Expect to see a number of motor bike tours this spring/ summer. Doc was told there is a large motorcycle blessing on Palm Sunday at four corners and the Scandinavian Motor Assn will be coming through Escalante by then. Germany, Switzerland, Scotland and Poland riders will follow. According to Doc’s tally the most motorcyclists through here thus far are from Texas. Stay tuned. Contact Chamber President Ken Ruick at the Circle D. Don’t forget to take your old eyeglasses into Griffin’s Market (or you can bring them to the Gallery) to recycle/reuse. We’ll take them until the 15th of April. Lastly, I want to thank Representative Noel and Senator Stowell for their efforts to help Utah Counties with RS 2477 roads. These transportation links are key to our tourism efforts and keeping them open and maintained is extremely important for our guides, outfitters, lodging establishments ,eateries, etc. Both Smokey Mountain Road and Hole-in-the-Rock Rd are RS2477 roads. They worked on two bills this past session and they were both passed and were signed by the Governor. Good Job. Until next week - - - Bryce ValleyArea News by Vicki D. Update on the Bryce Valley Bronze Mustang Statue: The Bryce Valley PTA would like to update everyone on the progress of the Bronze Mustang Statue. First, we want to thank everyone who has contributed thus far. There has been a great response to the project. Many people have donated time and expertise to help us realize this dream. Because of this, we have already started engraving the granite tiles to go around the base. We are expecting the statue to arrive on May 8, 2009. We want to let everyone know that time is winding down for donations. We don’t want anyone to be left out. If you still wish to contribute to the project, please send in your donation of any amount. If you wish to have your name, class, or a saying engraved, please do not procrastinate. Just a reminder, anyone who contirbutes will have their name engraved on the community tile. If you wish to have your own tile, the cost varies from $100.00 to $750.00 depending on the size of tile you want. Please contact Bryce Valley High School for further information. We look forward to a great community celebration once the Bronze Mustang arrives and is placed in the entrance of Bryce Valley High School. Don’t delay if you still wish to be a part of history for all who are proud to be a part of the Mustang heritage.
