I know, I know, it’s reality television. But, something needs to be said for a show like “Idol.” Now, don’t get me wrong; I’m not typically a fan of reality television. I do, though, like to be inspired from watching people reach their dreams and doing whatever it takes (especially during uncertain economic times). These contestants come in all shapes, colors and sizes (not to leave out attire). And from all over the country. Most have sacrificed something to be on the show especially single moms Alexis Grace and Megan Joy Corkrey. Some have “ridiculous chops” as new “Idol” judge, Kara DioGuardi, often says when referring to great vocals. We see contestants stretched to perform in ways they wouldn’t normally (performing in groups during Hollywood week or singing without the security of an instrument). We see emotions; drama and nerves run the spectrum (especially narrowing down to the top36). Some sang the same song too many times or their performance was boring or they forgot words. Others have incredible manners and are humble like working class oil ring worker Michael Sarver known for saying things like, “Yes, Ma’am,” and “Yes, Sir.” Some added humor like Nick Mitchell (aka Norman Gentle) who nearly made it into the top 12 and who was, I thought, hysterical. And then we’re moved by heart-wrenching stories like Danny Gokey losing his wife a month before his audition or Lil Rounds being a tornado survivor or even the first ever top 12 blind contestant Scott MacIntyre. We see guts, determination and faith. We see and hear contestants nail their performance one week and blow it the next. We see begging and pleading as in the case of Puerto Rican Tatiana Del Toro. We see contestants who don’t heed judge’s counsel like choosing the right song (I’m sure many of the top 36 had now wished they’d done otherwise). We see second chances. And, for the first time in “Idol” history, they added a 13th contestant, “Anoop Dawg” (Anoop Desai), as judge Randy Jackson coined him, to their top 12, I mean, 13. Say anything’s possible? Miracles do happen. What “Idol” contestants go through is a lot like what we go through in life. Making sacrifices. Having “ridiculous chops” (insert your own talent here). Being stretched beyond our limits and comfort zone. Being criticized and de- termining how we’re going to react. Experiencing an array of emotions or nerves and sometimes even being exposed to drama. We learn what it means to have the “whole package” (talent, presence, faith, confidence, attitude). We learn that when we don’t heed recommendations that there are sometimes consequences. We learn that we can get into ruts and be too boring or forget what we’re doing or saying. We learn how to “nail” or “kill” a talent --acing it-only to realize that we can also, if our egos or lack of preparation or emotions get in the way, create disaster. “American Idol” teaches us how to be and how not to be (studying it could actually be a college course). So, whatever your dream’s in life, make sure to “bring it” (“Idol” language for doing your absolute best). Contestants are a lot like us only in a different forum. If you watch this show, learn from it. For it may very well make you an “American Idol” in whatever your chosen field (mom, CEO, free-lancer, educator, serviceman, etc.). If you could only figure out how to get college credit at the same time. WEARIN’ MY COLORS by Jerry Torgerson jtcolt45@msn.com Gotta jump back on my soap box, The double standard lights a’glarin. Pointin out the lies and spin the main stream media’s sharin. Their latest double standard, came off like dumb and dumber. Those “big time liberal tax cheats” and good ol “Joe the plumber.” It became the Media Mission to destroy ol plumber Joe. Cause he asked a simple question, “The messiah” didn’t know. The liberal media went to work, with memos and with faxes. Some liberal out in liberal land, saw, one year, Joe missed his taxes. The liberals all across the land said that Joe’s a dispicaple pup For him to miss his taxes… we need to string him up. Fast forward to the present our new I.R.S. “Chief’s” big advancement Plumber Joes a tax cheat.. for a “liberal” it’s a resume enhancement. They circle up the wagons cover up all “liberal trash”. Why focus on “liberal tax cheats”, when theres a conservative they can bash. Like that ”big threat”, The Palin family and their down syndrome baby boy. Sarah’s hot new wardrobe ”trumped” John Edwards “Bimbo toy”. When the photos (finally) surfaced John made his “Noble Admission” He only cheated on Elizabeth, When her cancer was in remission. No problem there for the liberal media they in fact seemed over joyed. Edwards remains a “Classy Progressive” The Palin family need be destroyed. When it comes to the main stream media theres a total lack of shame. They’ll take down any good American to advance their liberal gain. At least with “Rush” we know what we’ve got.. and laugh at the liberal loathing. He’s not (slithering) around with lies and spin.. like media wolves in sheep clothing. |
