UPAXLP Every1Counts Who makes you feel special? And, who do you make feel special? The flip side? Did you ever make someone not feel special? Did someone ever make you not feel special? I hate to admit, but I can answer yes to the two latter questions (not a proud admission either especially the not making someone feel special part). But, really, think about the last time you actually made someone feel special. What did you do? What did you say? What were you thinking? And when was the last time someone made you feel special? What did they do? What did they say? What were they thinking? Hopefully, our spouses and family make us feel special. Simply by the “I love yous”, the smiles, kind acts of service, unconditional love, etc. And, hopefully, our bosses, co-workers, school mates, coaches, teachers, friends, and neighbors, do the same. It doesn’t matter what bad you’ve done in your sojourn here, you’re still special and a person of value and worth. You matter. You’re important. You have purpose. However, this in no way excuses our behavior that’s inappropriate. Or illegal. That’s not what I’m saying. Rather, think about psychologist Dr. Wayne Dyer’s quote when thinking about another or a situation, especially if you’re having trouble with that person or situation. “Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.” How about truth in that statement? (How about a mouthful?). Mandy Johnson, 20, who perished, along with nine others, last August in the small plane crash in Moab, was right on about making people feel special. In high school, she worked to remember everyone’s name and something about them so that when she saw them she could make them feel important. Not bad for a high school student, huh? Ways people have shown me I’m special? Through compliments, notes, letters, emails, known and unknown acts of service, being loyal to my name in my absence and presence, giving me the benefit of the doubt, assuming the best, supporting, trusting and loving me, and believing that I’ll succeed, no matter what. Like an email I received today, from a friend, an Army colonel, also an Army chaplain (I used to write his “Chaplain’s Corner” for an Army newspaper in Japan) who wrote, “I’m so proud of all the good things you have accomplished, but more so of the good person you are.” I don’t write this to brag. And, I’m certainly not a martyr. Not in the least bit. I’d say I’m more a work in progress (a huge work in progress, actually). A person just trying to do the right thing, who, occasionally trips up now and then again. Anyway, this Army chaplain knows I have faults. He knows I’m not perfect, yet he sees beyond my inadequacies and loves and believes in me regardless. How about you? Made anyone feel special today?
