The project was adopted by the Dixie Business Alliance at Dixie State College and strongly supported by the SBDC at Snow College. With sponsorship from Zions Bank, the resultant web-enhanced training program, BizSMART®, .has now educated five cohorts of participants. The program was designed for Utah businesses, but has been utilized by some outside of the state, including one who participated from overseas. BizSMART® is a six-week training program which allows participants to focus on one or both of two objectives: 1) Development of a business plan, or 2) Engaging in learning activity assignments to sharpen entrepreneurial skills. Typically, the challenge of traditional distance learning programs in which the learners are not face-to-face with the instructor, is the lack of personal interaction and responsiveness to individualized needs. The BizSMART® model addresses this challenge by utilizing SBDC counselors throughout the state, who have been trained to serve as local coaches for BizSMART® participants. These coaches provide critical support through direct contact with participants as they proceed through the online program. "I advocated for training that could be delivered primarily online, with some local face-to-face support because it would help us provide services to the outlying communities of a large region. The training material is top-quality, yet it can be effectively delivered over even a dial-up connection. I'm pleased with it." said Alan Christensen, director of the SBDC and Custom Fit Training program at Snow College. The six-county region served by these Snow College programs covers approximately 20% of the state of Utah. flexibility and determination-two great entrepreneurial qualities. We've learned a great deal with our first year of BizSMART® and look forward to continuing in 2007," said Jill Elliss, Director of Dixie Business Alliance and BizSMART® program administrator. The next round of BizSMART® is scheduled just in time for entrepreneurs wishing to put some teeth in their New Year's resolutions. The registration deadline is January 5, 2007 and class begins the following week. More information and online registration may be accessed at www.snow.edu/business.
