It wasn't a blanket except on the lawns or in shaded areas and you had to be an early riser to get to see it in these places. Perhaps the threat of this 'storm* kept the deer hunters away because I have never seen such a quiet weekend of the opening of the hunt. No deer hunters ball and Main Street devoid of out-of state vehicles. I hope the hunt has not lost it's alure! Evalyn and I made an overnight run to Panaca to see the production of "A Little Off Broadway" presented by the "Stage Struck Players" of Caliente, Pioche, and Panaca, Nevada. This was an annual event for many years until Kathy Tucker who started it and kept it together moved away. The cast kept it going for a few years until [according to Pete and Beverly (son-in-law & daughter and members of the cast) they got too old and tired and missed a few years. They now .have a new director and an almost totally new cast and intend on again making it an annual event which Evalyn and I hope to be able to attend since we still have family involved. (Pete is sound and light man and Beverly is ticket taker). The proceeds go to various community needs since all participants (cast and stage hands) are unpaid volunteers who enjoy sharing their talents to provide a few nights entertainment for friends, neighbors and and visitors. I am sure we have several new readers of the Insider that wonder what a "Panguitch Connection" is so I decided I should let them know how it started and what it means. Several years ago Evalyn and I were visiting the site of the new Nauvoo Temple during it's construction and touring the site of the old city of Nauvoo with it's few remaining historic buildings. During an orientation lecture in the visitor center the presenter called on members of the audience to give their names and tell where they were from. When I mentioned Panguitch he remarked, "Panguitch, yes, I know where Panguitch is". Kind of facetiously I said that everyone knows where Panguitch is, to which he replied, "Is that so, lets just see.". He then asked the audience of around 50 people if they knew where Panguitch was. All but 2 held up their hand which brought the remark, "It looks like you might be right. (The gentleman sitting behind me tapped me on the shoulder and told me that he spent a few days every Summer fishing at Panguitch Lake.) This experience and a couple of others I have had gave me the idea of asking that anyone who was born, lived, went to school, etc. in Panguitch and met someone in the most unlikely place and under the most unusual circumstances who also had a tie with Panguitch, please let me know and it would be mentioned in the Knothole (Panguitch News back then) as a "Panguitch Connection". The following Panguitch Connections come from Merle's and Pauline's recent visit to China. (Reported in last week's Knothole.) While visiting their children in Beijing, they met and spent some time visiting with Steve Hendryx, son of Bemett and Bertha Hendryx, former residents of Panguitch who all of the long time residents will remember. Bernett managed the Cameron Hotel/Motel after his Father-in law, Allen Cameron, turned it over to him and lived in the home just North of the hotel. His wife, Bertha, is Pauline's first cousin. Burnett was an avid promoter of the scenic wonders of Southern Utah. He ran a Tourist Bureau in the hotel, was a skilled photographer and presented slide shows of our scenic attractions each evening for tourists and anyone else who wanted to see what he considered to be some of our most important assets. If my memory is correct, he was the one who gave Kodachrome Basin and Grosvernors Arch their names. They also met and visited with Dan Parker, great nephew of LeRoy Parker who was better known as "Butch Cassidy". Butch was born in Beaver, Utah and grew up in Circleville. He was never a resident of Panguitch but did spend at least one night in the Blue Pine Hotel and was very familiar with our area.
