The Utah Departments of Health (UDOH) and Environmental Quality (DEQ) are reminding Utahns about an important online tool to track outdoor air quality the Recess Guidance for Schools. The Guidance was developed to help school leaders know when the air is bad enough to keep students indoors. "Many people don't feel well when the air quality is poor," said Rebecca Jorgensen of the UDOH Asthma Program. "Children are especially affected by dirty air and it's important they be kept inside on the worst air quality days." UDOH and DEQ have worked with schools to implement the guidance over the past several years. School administrators using the guidance check PM2.5 levels daily. When levels are between 35.5-55.4 ug/ m3, 'sensitive' students are accommodated indoors. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, is asking President Obama to recognize the championship Boise State University football team at the White House for its undefeated season. In a Jan. 14, 2010 letter to the president, Hatch said the Boise State Broncos are every bit as deserving of that invitation to the White House as Bowl Champion Series champion Alabama, especially since both teams were undefeated and the NCAA has not instituted a playoff system to decide a true national champion. "The BCS has crowned the University of Alabama — an excellent football team, no doubt deserving of the honor and attention they've received as — national champions," Hatch wrote. "However, as you know, the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) has yet to institute a playoff system ... , leaving fans to speculate whether more than one team is worthy of the sport's top honor, particularly in those years, like this one, when more than one team finishes the season undefeated." As Hatch stated in the letter, "Inviting both Alabama and Boise State to the White House this year will not erase the unfairness of the past," including what took place in the 2004 and 2008 seasons when teams from the University of Utah finished unbeaten but were not given national championship consideration by the BCS. However, according to Hatch, such a gesture would "send a clear message that champions should be chosen on the field and not in prearranged agreements." Hatch noted in the letter that the president was quoted in November 2008 as supporting a college football playoff system and "that you planned to 'throw [your] weight around a little bit' on efforts to reform the BCS. "In my view, inviting both these great football teams to the White House would be one particularly effective way to do just that," Hatch continued in the letter. "Furthermore, should you invite only Alabama, you would add legitimacy and credibility to a system we both believe to be flawed." GARFIELD COUNTY HOSTS MULTI-AGENCY EMERGENCY SERVICES TRAINING a common organizational structure designed to improve emergency response operations of all types and complexities. The training included a lecture, communications exercises, and a tabletop exercise. The training also provided a forum to improve upon emergency response procedures based on a review of several recent incidents in Garfield County. The one-day training concluded with three scenarios including a house fire in Tropic, a motor vehicle accident in Red Canyon, and a search and rescue north of Escalante. During each scenario, different emergency services groups were called upon to go through the steps they would take via radio to county, especially considset up a command system, ering that over 90% of the call for needed resources, attendees were volunteers and ensure efficient inci- who gave up their Saturday dent management.
