Pat Dix PANGUITCH VARSITY AND JV TEAMSWIN DIXIE FLYER INVITATION VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT The defending 1A State Champion Panguitch Lady Bobcats Volleyball team gave notice as to why they are the defending champs, this weekend, as the battled their way through the largest and longest tourney in the state, The Dixie Flyer Invitational, at St. George. The Lady Cats chalked up wins over 3A champs Hurricane, 2A champs Richfield, Union, Salem Hills, Piute, and Monument Valley. In the championship contest they ran up against a very tall Spanish Fork squad, that sported two 6’3” girls, one of whom has already signed with the U. of U., plus a couple of other 6 footers. Pangutch lost game one 19-25, but then dug in, got their hackles up, and set down the Lady Dons 29-27 and 15-13, to capture the crown, and prove it is the size of the heart that counts!!! Great setting from Natasha Barney and Carl Holman, plus superb blocking from Taelyr Tebbs, Aubry Parkin, and Chelsie Barney, along with the fine hitting of Kalani Norris and Breanne Bateman, were instrumental in the victory. And Shelby Taylor might just be the best Libero in the entire state, passing and digging ball after ball. The Lady Bobcats of the JV squad played back to back games, downing Olympus in the semi final and Juan Diego for the crown. In both the Varsity and JV catagories, it was total team effort, dedication, and cohesiveness that brought home the gold. Congratulations to Those Receiving Ribbons at the Garfield County Fair! The Bobcats got off to a rip roaring beginning in Moqui Land, racking up 10 runs in the first inning of play. Zach Brophy was the Cat’s big gun with two singles and a triple and 3 runs batted in. Dexter Humphreys’ double and single accounted for a pair of RBIs, while Cameron Fawson had a 2 for 3 day at the dish, with an RBI, and Jory Owens chipped in with a pair of Ribbys also. Brooks Leach improved his season total ERA to a miniscule 0.93, going three innings, with 6 strikeouts and no earned runs. Riley Miller’s 2 inning stint held the Moquis to one earned run, and 5 strikeouts, to close out the 22 to 2 contest. At Bryce Valley, Wayne’s big bats were just too much for the Mustangs, as they fell 15 to 1. Flu Shots Arrive Early Vaccine for this year’s seasonal influenza has arrived at the Southwest Utah Public Health Department (SWUPHD) and is now available to the public. The annual flu shot is recommended for all children aged 6 months to 18 years and for all adults; especially pregnant women, people over 50, those with chronic illnesses, and caregivers. “This is the first time we’ve been able to get such a head start for our community”, says Dr. David Blodgett, SWUPHD Director/Health Officer, “This is an important year for everyone to come in and get their flu shot early or attend our Flu Shoot-Out in Panguitch on October 1st.” The vaccine being developed for the new H1N1 virus will be a separate shot and could be available as early as this fall. Flu shots are $25 or no charge for Medicare, Medicaid, PEHP (Preferred & Advantage), or SelectHealth plans and are offered at the SWUPHD office on 609 N. Danica Rose, Shelby Mathews Lake Powell Stories... Wind Stories...Last week I related how it took my 13yr old grandson to show my daughter & I how to set up a new wind shade and how it nearly ‘launched’ us late that nite during a wind storm. For those of you who’ve ever experienced what the wind or even gusts of wind can do out on Lake Powell, you’ll appreciate these two ‘Wind Tales.’ During the decade of the 80’s, I owned & operated a 27ft pontoon boat and invited both youth groups (scouts, church, etc) and families to join me and a crew of two for Adventures on Lake Powell. Those were years of discovery, adventure, sharing and responsibility...shared with a variety of youngsters who actively sought to be crew members aboard the Expanding Horizons. As one of the ‘rewards’ for their selfless ‘service’ I often invited them in small groups, after the end of the summer for short weekend outings of complete re- lazation with me (their Captain) as Chief Cook ‘n’ Bottle Washer...while they slept in...with no cooking or clean-up duties and hours of swimming and water skiing. On one such trip, we had moored the boat on a nice sandy shore in Warm Creek with the 2nd day offering a pretty strong wind that, unusually, continued into the evening. The kids all wanted to sleep on the upper deck so I converted one of the dinettes to a bed and we all hitthe-hay with the wind howling all around. Early in the morning, I needed to relieve myself (the port-a-pottie was set up on-shore)...half asleep I unzipped the forward canvass, stepped onto the forward deck with eyes mostly closed, to jump down onto the shore... As I stepped off the deck I realized, belately, that I was actually jumping into the...WATER!! During the nite, the wind had managed to TURN the boat (by way of a loose mooring line) 180 degrees, with the bow now facing the water instead of the shore! Needles to say, the boys kidded me about myMorning Christening for years!! On one of our ‘Adult trips, we had three couples (no children) with two in their 30’s and one set of parents, in their 60’s. The first several days had gone very well and we were moored on in 50 Mile Canyon (up the Escalante) with a bright cloudless sky during breakfast. Earlier, we had ‘oriented’ our guests about how to operate on-board equipment, where to find items and how to use (such things as the special upper- deck mattresses)...so they KNEW about the importance of stowing sleeping bags immediately upon arising in the mornings as they all wanted to sleep ‘underthe-stars’ on the upper deck. Well, on this particular morning, with the scent of freshly brewed coffee and cooking French Toast, they had ALL come down...with out their bags! Sure enough, as can happen regularly on the lake, a swirling, strong momentary gust-of-wind roared down-canyon and took ALL six sleeping bags and tossed them into the water from the upper deck... The crew & I understood the problem in an instant and jumped into the water to ‘save’ the bags while our guests stood by in amazement. (It took day for the bags to be thoroughly dried in the sun.) At the end of that trip, the monetary tips (for the boys) were unusually large!!! Next Week: Fishing Stories... |
