The Clayte Durfey Memorial 5K Run drew 58 registrants and 46 runners. Whitley Griggs of Walla Walla, WA had the fastest time of 0:20:23 and took home the coveted "Clayte's Run Cape Pin". Escalante residents Ryan Brooks placed 2nd and Aaron Johnson took 3rd. Jill Phillips took 1st in the Women's division with daughter Lindsey 2nd and Vickie Crawford 3rd — all of Escalante. Profits from the race are shared between the Lions Club and the Clayte Durfey Foundation. The Lions Club share helps offset the costs of the fireworks. The foundation will donate their share to families of children with life threatening diseases. State Bank of Southern Utah, Trails End Real Estate, Garfield Ready Mix, and JT Steel were major sponsors. After the race the Escalante volunteer Firefighters fed about 115 folks breakfast and many donated their change and more to the firemen's boot. You could tour their new fire station and donate for a chance to win a new rifle. The drawing is July 24th. The Escalante Farmer's Market Vendors set up in the park and reported all did "very well". Beginning at 5:00 PM, the Potato Valley Lions Club fed over 120 folks BBQ ribs dinner before the fireworks. What a great day it was. Our thanks to everyone, vendors, volunteers, customers and, of course, the Garfield County Insider. The current project for our club is the "Welcome to Escalante" signs. We've been blessed to have the financial support of the Escalante Lions Club, support from UDOT in getting permits and placement and the labor of the Escalante Boy Scouts gathering rock. Hogsback Masonry has donated their labor for the rock work, Arc Welding and Shandon Industries helped place and weld the arches and we're getting close to being done. The first coast of paint went on the west sign last week. We'll gather more rock around the 15th of July and hope to get them done before too much longer. As always, we're a Lions Club, founded on service and help for those visually impaired. If you know of anyone in the Escalante area with impaired vision in need of help don't hesitate to let us know. We'll be selling snow cones at the Escalante July 24th celebration in the afternoon at the Pavilillion, or you can buy a Clayte's Run T-shirt. Or visit my website, www.bubbaspud.com and send us a note. Thanks again, and until the 24th - - - Bubbaspud, Official Mascot of Potato Valley Lions Club |
