Call 896-4930 to schedule an appointment for you or your family OH, ABOUT THAT... by Ryan Davis, Editor Dear Progressive Movement, Your cause crushes my heart. Not that my heart matters. I truly understand that I am “only” a human. My life is expendable.......... Oh...., by the way, I have a name. It’s Ryan. Supply & Demand, right? I get it. I know I am a dying breed. I get a strong impression that your agenda wishes for all who believe like me need to accept your belief that God doesn’t exist as a being. I don’t believe that will happen. Pretty soon, the America “you know and cherish” will too, be only a memory, and like me, every memory you hold dear will be disregarded as sentimental nonsense. It will be forced to give way to a bigger and better cause. I love America. Or at least what it used to be. I honored the opportunity as a youth to salute the flag of the United States. I still do honor that flag. I want to keep it that way. Why? One big reason is, because I love the men/women from Lyman that fought in the wars to preserve my freedom. I honor them and I honor “their” memories. I value human life, and these guys were willing to possibly die for my simple freedom. For me. People like Alfonzo, Kennard, Jack, James, Mark, Glen, Wendell & many more. In my youth, their influence seared my heart. Their wives were willing to sacrifice their potential losses. You may never experience the gentleness and dignity their wives shared in so many ways. The only proof I have to offer is that I exist, and these experiences were real. All that remains now, are a few frail men who daily honor the gift of freedom. This, and also the silent integrity instilled in their children. The integrity you mock and interpret as dumbness. Just so you know, this dumbness is called “REVERENCE”. Truly, these men and women are the pure definition of the word “HONOR”. But why would you take my word for it. You want proof, right. I can’t prove Honor. I would venture to say that in all your “learning”, you can’t prove Honor exists, either. But don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone. Heaven forbid I look presumptive. Please Disregard. As the families of this belief read this, the giant in their hearts swells. This is where the community I live in exists. What does your heart feel? Are you beginning to see in your minds eye something that can’t be proven? How can that be? These people believe in hard work and sacrifice. Their fathers fought so that I could enjoy the quiet solitude you partially enjoy and quaintly recognize. I too, fear I was an intruder for many years. I believe now, and I understand. That remaning solitude you experience here in Wayne County is only a stale taste of what it used to be. Thank your progressive cause for that. You see, you are changing things. You are progressive. Progressive means change. Remember the day that wall street fell, well... we were so poor that we couldn’t tell. We were OK with that. We love the benefits of progress, but there is a place for everything. Sometimes you have to travel to get there. We are OK with that, too. Even if it takes a little more effort to get there. It’s a Cost/Benefit Analysis thing, right Weston? MORE DAY ONE STATE BASKETBALL The Rich Rebels jumped on Panguitch early, literally, and held on as the Bobcats mounted a fourth quarter charge that fell short for a 79 - 70 Rebel win. The Cats were hampered on defense late in the 3rd quarter with 4 starters playing with four fouls each, but still managed to outscore the Rebels 47 to 40 in the second half. Trac Norris had a game high 24 points, Brooks Leach and Eric Frandsen 13 each, and Bryce Taylor 11. Tyson Westwood’s 22 points, including 6 from three point land, was the pace setter for Piute as they held Tintic to just 8 field goals, to cruise to a 54 - 30 victory. Jaylin Christiansen was the other T Bird in double figures with 12, and Dylan Cunningham chipped in with 4 treys. THREE REGION 15 TEAMS ADVANCE AT STATE Three of Region 15’s five entries advanced to the quarter finals Wednesday while two fell into the consolation bracket. Defending State Champion Escalante finessed their way to a 72 - 48 win over an over matched Salt Lake Lutheran squad. Tim Hughes led all with 18, Brady Barney had 16, and Kevin Griffin added 13 more. The Moqui “Bomb Squad” had their sights zeroed in on the target, coming up with a total of seven treys. Tim Hughes 4, Logan McLemore, Kace Roundy, and Kam Roundy 1 each. Region 15 Champions Valley avoided an upset by Manilla, by sinking 10 of 12 from the charity stripe in quarter number four, to seal a 54 - 30 win. Matt Hoyt was the only Buffalo in double digits with a game high 16. The “dark horse” of Region 15, the Milford Tigers, played favored Whitehorse right down to the wire only to lose a heart breaker 71 to 68. With just 17 ticks left on the clock and the score knotted at 68, the Raiders sank a three pointer to send the Tigers into the consolation bracket. Whitehorse led 34 to 20 at the break and then Milford stormed back in the final 16 minutes, to fall short by just that three pointer. DAY 2 MOQUIS SURVIVE TABBY Score tied at 50; just 8.1 seconds left in the game; Tim Hughes at the line to shoot two, a tense moment even Hollywood could not script with more drama. And Hughes sinks both pressure packed free throws to advance Escalante to the semi final game with Rich. Leading by 10 at the half, the Moquis survived a 31 to 23 run by Tabiona in the final 16 minutes to gain the 52 - 50 victory, probaly the most important one of the season thus far. Tim Hughes led all with 24 points, and was the only Moqui in double figures. The “Bomb Squad kept Escalante on track with six from downtown. Tim Hughes 3, Dalton Lisonbee 2, and Jace Taylor and Logan McLemore with 1 each. Valley was the other Region 15 team to move into the semis with a 65 - 53 win over Whitehorse. The Buffalos defense shut down the Raiders in the second quarter, holding them to just 5 points, and racking 23, for a 16 point lead at the break. Clay Williams had 15, Lance Maxwell 14 and Matt Hoyt 11, as the Buffs continued to roll. It took an OT for Duchesne to drop Piute out of semi final contention, 52 - 45. Tied at 39 in regulation, the Eagles went on a 13 to 6 run in the overtime to gain a berth against Valley in the semi finals. Tyson Westwoods five treys and 21 point total was the game’s leader in the scoring column. A defensive contest it was not, as Panguitch cruised past Monument Valley 88 to 74. The Bobcats great leader, Trac Norris had a career game with 33 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists. Brooks Leach added 17, Eric Frandsen 14, and Bryce Taylor 12 as the Cats racked up an average of 22 points per quarter. Milford who sported a 4 - 11 regular season record, seemed to come alive as the 2009 season drew to a close. So it was Thursday as the Tigers advanced in consolation downing Monticello 58 to 54. Cade Boyter had another great game with 29 points, while Tyler Denny and Dylan Jones added 14 and 11 respectively. The Milford Tigers stayed alive in the tourney with a 64 to 48 drubbing of Green River. he Tiger’s Dylan Jones drained 6 three pointers and wound up with a game high 23 points, while team mate Cade Boyter chipped in an additional 17. So Saturday it is Milford versus Panguitch for the number 6 spot in the state. DAY 3 BOMB SQUAD BLASTS FOOTBALL FIVE Of all the events I have reported on in the past, today’s will be the most satisfying and for me, it makes the season. Why???................ESCALANTE 70 RICH 58!!!!!!!!! Tied with the Rebels at 34 at the half, the Moquis came roaring back to outscore Rich 36 to 24 in the remaining 16 minutes, and to then look forward to their confrontation with Duchesne in the Championship game. Kevin Griffin and Tim Hughes each scored 18 points, and Brady Barney 17, while he held the Rebels’ high scoring Caden Anderson to just 14. Kam Roundy had a pair of treys for the “Bomb Squad”, as did Tim Hughes, and Dalton Lisonbee rang up 1. Rich scored one more basket from the floor than the Moquis, but they sent Escalante to the line 35 times and the Moquis cashed in on 25. I have never been more sincere, when I say, Congratulations Moquis!!!! In the other semi final, Valley had their heart torn out when with 3.4 seconds to play, Duchesne bounced a three pointer around the rim and in, to send the Buffalos to a 40 - 38 loss. Matt Hoyt, Valley’s outstanding point guard, led all with 12 points, and fired up the final desperation shot at the final buzzer. In consolation, Trac Norris led Panguitch over Monticello 58 - 49, with an 18 point output, including a pair of treys. Eric Frandsen added 12 and Brooks Leach 11. Leading by just a mere 2 points at the break, the Bobcats went on a 31 to 24 run in the second half to seal the victory, and head for a confrontation on Saturday with Milford for 6th place in the Tournament. BOBCATS FINISH SIXTH A pair of Region 15 teams, Panguitch and Milford, squared off to do battle for the 6th and 8th places in state. With just a two point lead at half time, the Bobcats came out in the third quarter and out scored the Tigers 19 to 11, and then held on for a 62 - 52 win and sixth place in the State. Eric Frandsen’s 22 points led the Panguitch attack, while their great senior guard Trac Norris rang up yet another double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds plus two from beyond the arc. Brooks Leach added 11, and senior Bryce Taylor had 6 on a pair of treys and senior Trevor Peterson chipped in with 4 points. So in summation, Region 15 entered 5 representatives into the Tournament and all but one earned a place in State. Escalante Champions, Valley 3rd, Panguitch 6th, and Milford 8th. A young Piute squad who were eliminated on day three, ran into some tough luck in all three of their games or it might have been an all Region 15 final. Thanks to each and every one of you from our great Region, for an exciting and entertaining season. ACADEMIC ALL STATE Region 15 placed six players on the prestigious Academic All State squad. Trac Norris and Trevor Peterson from Panguitch, Lance and Tyce Peterson from Wayne, Cache Mortensen from Bryce Valley, and Matt Hoyt from Valley. Congratulations Gentlemen, you represent what high school athletics is all about.....The STUDENT Athlete. GIRL’S ALL STATE TOURNAMENT TEAM Four girls from are immediate area were named to the State Tournament team. From Panguitch, Chelsie Barney and Kalani Norris. Deysha Twitchell from Bryce Valley, and Kandice Gleave from Piute. I have not been able to find out if anyone from Wayne or Valley made it, so if anyone has that info I would appreciate it if you notify me at pat@scinternet.net.
