Springtime can be a beautiful time to visit the forest. However, because roads may be wet from winter, spring can bring great destruction to the forests infrastructure. Driving on wet roads can cause damage that is very expensive to repair. It can also limit the recreation opportunities available on the forest during the summer months because damaged roads may need to be closed for repair. Engineers and recreation managers across the forest will closely monitor forest use during the spring. If it becomes necessary, roads will be closed to protect the forest resources. Signs and/or barriers will indicate closed road segments. Drivers should avoid using Forest Service roads if their vehicle is creating ruts. Additionally, the Forest Service strongly discourages cross-country travel which can seriously damage sensitive forest resources. Our forthcoming Motorized Travel Plan prohibits cross-country travel. "We're asking for the public's cooperation. If the public will wisely use the forest lands, then we can avoid any unnecessary damage to our road system," Owens said. For more information about current road conditions, please contact your local District Office in Cedar City, Escalante, Loa, Panguitch, or St. George. For general forest1 questions, call (435) 865-3700. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE A Piute County project to market wood products made from small diameter timber has received a grant in the amount of $249,800 from the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Forest Service, an agency of USDA, selected 26 small businesses and community groups nationwide as grant recipients for awards ranging from nearly $ 125,000 to $250,000. Mel Terry, Piute County Economic Development Coordinator, credits the Fishlake National Forest and the Forest Service Regional Office in Ogden with this successful outcome of the county's application for funding. He said, "The folks on the Fishlake and in the Regional Office believed in us. They really championed our project and helped us to present it to the national office so that it would compete with other more wellestablished businesses." The grants will help create markets for small-diameter and low-valued trees (woody biomass) that are removed from national forests for a variety of reasons that include reducing theriskof wildfire, removing trees that are diseased or infested with insects, or clearing forestlands impacted by catastrophic weather. The trees for Piute County's Woody Biomass Project come from Aspen Meadows on Monroe Mountain of the Richfield Ranger District. The County had a stewardship contract with the Fishlake for the removal of those trees. The Piute County project also creates opportunities to exercise regional partnerships. In 1996, the Forest Service had awarded grant money to Wayne County to acquire a kiln that is now be- ing used for this project in Piute County. Terry explained that the operation will move into the old Circleville High School for the next phase, after the Mayor and Town Board made the offer. He said that it's really the only location in the county that has the power source necessary to operate the state-of-the-art woodworking equipment. The Woody Biomass Utilization Project will produce and market Aspen products that will compliment the building industry because the demand for Aspen is high but it is in low supply. The County's products will include wall paneling, wainscot, and stair spindles. Terry said that one of the objectives of the project includes increasing the pay rate in the County, and providing training to high school students in the operation of the equipment. This project will ultimately create the need for new businesses and new jobs, as new product lines are produced by the County for entrepreneurs who want to explore the wood products industry. An industrial park is in the planning stages. It would provide adequate building space for new businesses and encourage outside industry to move in the County. Terry said, "This grant money gives us real weight as we attract other industry from outside the County to the proposed industrial park." Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns announced the award of $6.2 million in grants. The grantees were chosen from 93 applications requesting more than $20 million in funding support.
