B Y PAT D I X LADY CATS CAPTURE STATE VOLLEYBALL CONSOLATION CROWN Due to their 2nd place finish in the Region 15 Volleyball Tourney, the Panguitch Lady Bobcats were forced to host a play-in game with Oakley High School cf Salt Lake City. With all 12 varsity players participating Panguitch swept the Explorers to gain a berth in the State Tournament. The Bobcats dropped the first game at State to Tintic in a tough four game set that saw each game decided by a mere 2 or 3 points. Now relegated to the Consolation bracket, Panguitch took the bit in their teeth and came roaring back with a 3 game sweep of St. Joseph, and a four game win over Escalante. That left just a match up with a tall and athletic Tabiona Tiger team that soon had the Cats down 2 games to 1. It was then that the girls 1 from Panguitch showed their true grit, coming back to win the next two games 25 to 15 and 15 to 9, to claim the Consolation Crown. Senior Brittany Frandsen finished her season and high school career with a great game. To quote Coach Troy Norris, "We will sorely miss Brittany's great attitude and dedication. She has been a joy to know and to coach." Coaches Troy and Ann Marie Norris are to be congratulated for a remarkably fine season in which they had to go with talented but very young players. BOBCAT BOYS END X-COUNTRY DROUGHT The Panguitch High School's Boy Cross Country team, comprised of Trac Norris, Josh Bateman, Jon Ricketts, Brady Barney, Cameron Leach, Joe Adams, and Trevor Peterson ended a 37 year drought, by bringing home the Utah State Cross Country Championship. Josh Bateman finished a team high 3rd place, the highest ever recorded by a Bobcat runner at State. Trac Norris, who has won every Region meet that he has run in, including this year's Region Championship at Mt. Carmel Junction, finished a strong 6th, despite a sudden illness that overtook him on the course. First year Coaches James Meidell and Danny Yardley are to be congratulated on the incredible job they have done with these fine athletes, not only in bringing home the State Crown but also the Region 15 Trophy. The total team score was 66 points, 27 points ahead of 2nd place St. Joseph. The dedication shown by these young runners was inspiring, as some practiced at 5:45 am and others after school or after baseball practice. Led by Heather Orton's 6th place, the girl's team of Krystal Taylor, Kelsie Mathew, Shelby Taylor, and Carrie Owens came in with a strong 4th place finish at State and a 3rd at Region, which bodes well foriheir next crack at the crown in 07. OUTFITTER/GUIDE ARRESTED FOR GUIDING WITHOUT PERMITS Special agents and law enforcement officers from the Kanab City Police Department, U.S. Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service arrested Kenneth Paul Church, 57, yesterday for guiding Jeep tours on BLM and National Forest lands without a permit. Church operated "Blindfold Tours" out of Kanab, and took people on Jeep tours of slot canyons, Native American sites and scenic vistas in southern Utah. This is not the first time federal agencies have accused Church of guiding without a permit. The BLM accused Church of illegally providing Jeep tours on BLM lands in 2004. Church was found guilty in that case, which is currently on appeal. Special use permits are required to conduct any kind of commercial business on federally managed lands. People who wish to conduct commercial business on federal lands should contact their local BLM, Forest Service, National Park Service or U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service office for details. |
