This is a written recognition given to Family Clubs, Community Clubs or Individual 4-H Members for their participation and support of the Garfield County 4-H youth program. A "Spotlight" (or flashlight) is given to each month's award recipients at our year-end awards banquet in December. In the "Spotlight" this September is the Barnson Family from Escalante. Mandy, Jamie, Cayse, Cache, and Karrisa Barnson. The Barnsons have been participating in the Garfield Co. 4-H youth program for several years. Not only are they a Family Livestock Club but they are also involved in the born again Escalante 4-H Cornmunity Horse Club. Mandy is a very involved parent, she serves on the Garfield County Jr. Livestock Show committee, helps during Horse Club meetings, and is always willing to lend a hand at 4-H activities and events. The boys are awesome 4-Her's! They attend and participate in club meeting, help at service projects and are always eager to lean new ways to improve their 4-H projects. We are grateful for the Barnsons participation in the 4-H youth program and look forward to working with them for years to come. For more information about 4-H or 4-H activities visit www.garfield4-h.org Last Wednesday Piute's Volleyball team came to town and in the first game gave the Lady Cats all they wanted. It was tied at 19 when the Cats pulled away to a 25 to 21 victory. In the next two games the Ladies took them quite easily 25-13 and 25-11. Piute is ranked 3rd in the State behind Panguitch and Rich. It could be a different game when we play at Piute. The girls went all the way out to Milford, for three easy games. In my opinion the Lady Cats who won the State last year, are even better this year, against Piute it didn't appear that they have any weakness. Their next game will on the 8th with the always dangerous Wayne Badgers, and then out to Escalante on the 15th and South Sevier a 2A team will be here on Sept. 16, and the next night they will host Bryce Valley Mustangs. After a week with only one game, the Lady Cats have three games. Saturday will be the Sophomore Tournament. This is a fun tournament and you can see what the team will look like in the future. The Bob Cats Baseball team played at BV and took them out at 13 to 3. In Milford they got some competition winning by 7 to 4. Next week Piute will be here on the 8th and the following week there will two more home games with Valley here on the 15th and BV on the 17th. The Cats are having a lot of success again this year, baseball is a funny sport and the best team doesn't always win. But they could go all the way. Thursday the 2nd Coaches Danny Yardley and Jen Houston took 47 kids to a cross country meet at Piute. All the teams in the region are represented. Piute has a couple of runners who were way out a head; however Panguitch had 5 runners in the top twelve. The Cats were led by the Norris twins who came in 7-8th, they are ninth graders, look to see some big things out of them in the future. Panguitch came in second behind Piute and a lot of kids got medals. The Lady Cats took the top three positions and they ended up in first place. It is great to see all of these kids out having fun with this sport; Danny and Jen are great motivators that can make anything fun. Piute is getting a new face lift at their high school, with major changes, replacing a very old school, it is good to have a fine buildings to go with so many great teachers. Dr. Mooney is back coaching the 6, 7,8th grade football team, he says the team is having a fun time, and it is made up of kids from all over the County. They practice three days a week, once in Panguitch, BV and Escalante. He said that Escalante has some really good players. Also this is the way to get a team big enough to compete.
