King of Ogden, UT researched his great-great-grandmother's life from her birth in Scotland to her trek through Hole-in-the-Rock with the original expedition that blasted the opening for passage down to the Colorado River. Jane McKechnie Walton and her family settled Bluff, then Monticello. She was shot and killed on July 24, 1891, 119 years ago to the day that her greatgreat-grandson will speak on the early pioneers, Jane's life story, her wary friendship with Chief Posey, and the circumstances surrounding her untimely death. Mr. King's presentation will be held downstairs at the Heritage Center starting at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 24. Copies of his book, "Jane, A Woman's Determination" will be available for purchase and autographing at the presentation. This is a FUND-RAISER for the Sidewalk Project, the construction of a sidewalk for school children to get to and from our local schools in safety. Tickets ($10) and copies of the book may be purchased from Irene Brockdorff at The Gallery at Clarke's and also at Clarke's Country Market. Tickets may also be purchased from Annette Chynoweth. Call The Gallery at 679-8405 or Irene at 616-1069 for more information. There will still be time to get to Ruby's Fireworks Display! Excerpt: "....Chief Posey stood almost erect and looked as if he was preparing to salute when he said, "Me want to help find Roach." The sheriff was astonished at the outlaw Indian's offer to help and could not understand why Posey would place himself, and his warriors in such a position as to help a white man. "Suspiciously, he queried Posey further stating, "Why?" "Jane Walton friend. You need posse and we go," replied Posey in the best English he could muster. And with that, the deal was made between the government and the criminal. 99 95 East Center Street • Panguitch, tn. 84759 PHONE: (435) 676-2212 6:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. - Breakfast in the Park 8:00 a.m. - Gather at Triple C Arena to depart for rides 6:00 p.m. AN rodeo FAX: (435) 676-8850 DIABETES CLINIC: FRIDAY ]ULY 9 TH Pam — 4pm - FREE Blood Sugar Testing - Am I at risk? - What is diabetes? - How can I avoid getting diabetes? - What should I do if I have diabetes? - How can I best manage my blood sugar? - Come get all your questions answered! THE GARFIELD COUNTY FAIR IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER By SuzAnne Jorgensen The Garfield County Fair is only six weeks away on August 18 — 21, 2010 and the Queen's pageant is the week before on Wednesday, August 11. This year the fair's theme is "A County that Play's Together Stays Together", The winner of the theme contest was Jaylee Torgersen (see photo). Plan to bring your family and friends to the Garfield County Fair! Carnival, bingo, fair exhibits, entertainment, ping pong ball drop, horse fun day, livestock and small animal shows are just some of the fun events and activities that will be happening at the fair. The fair will be here soon, so plan now what you would like to enter! What talents and hobbies do you have and do that you could display at the fair? Do you do woodworking, gardening, needlework, arts and crafts, baking? The list could go on and on so check the fair information if you need more ideas. This year you can enter two items per lot and anything you completed in the last two years (on year for canning). Make sure items are clean, well presented and your best work. If your friends or neighbors have talents or hobbies that they could show, encourage them to enter into the fair. Participants must be residents of Garfield County at the time of the fair. Youth can enter exhibits in the open division as well. Youth who plan to enter in the 4-H division of the fair must be enrolled in the project they plan to exhibit for the 2009-2010 4-H year by August 1, 2010. It is now $5 to register for 4-H (after June 1). 4-H exhibits which become eligible for the State Fair will receive a sticker and instructions regarding State Fair entry. 4-H youth may enter only one exhibit per lot. Additional items may be entered into the open division of the fair. Fair information will be posted on the Garfield County Website http://garfield.utah. gov/ as it becomes available. Any rules not covered by the Garfield County rules will defer to the State Fair rules. The Fair paper should be coming out the end of July or the first of August in the Garfield County Insider. Now is a good time to thank all the volunteers who help make our fair happen. They contribute many hours to help make our fair what it is. This year our county will be judging the Kane County Fair on Thursday, August 12. There will be an orientation for judges and volunteers the week before at the Senior Center in Panguitch. Also, if you missed the pressure canner gauge testing, I will be passing through the county at test lids at the Heritage Center, Tropic; Henrieville and Escalante Senior Centers on Wednesday, July 21. It is best if you can leave your lid in advance or call for more specific times. Be sure to label it with your name and phone number. Remember that if you enter canning exhibits in the fair, they should have processing information included on the jar. Be sure to have that information ready at entry time.
