"We invite everyone to come explore and celebrate the diverse activities and attractions available along Byway 143 on June 12th," said Dutch Deutschlander, Byway Co-Chair and Mayor of Brian Head Town, "this celebration culminates seven years of local byway corridor management planning among two counties, three communities, businesses, individuals, and several state and federal agencies before Utah's Patchwork Parkway was designated as a National Scenic Byway for its historical intrinsic qualities on Oct. 16, 2009". The day's activities will start at 7:30 AM with Pancake breakfasts on both ends of the byway (Parowan and Panguitch). From 10 AM to 4 PM one can drive to the other end of the byway stopping at a series of sites and participating in a variety of activities including hiking, geo-caching, snow sculpturing, history tours and quilting work- shops. "This year, we have an unique opportunity to showcase three of the four seasons all on the same day with summer weather in Parowan, winter snow pack at Brian Head, and spring weather in Panguitch," said Nancy Dalton, Byway Coordinator. Simultaneously, at 5 PM at both ends of the byway, a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at Center and Main in Parowan and Panguitch. Guest speakers will include state legislators and UDOT representatives. Evening activities will start at 7 PM include a PreSummer Solstice Interpretative Tour and Sunset Observation at Parowan Gap, a Star-Gazing Party at Cedar Breaks National Monument, and a dinner theater performance at the Pan- KEVIN JOHNSON'S RIDE ACROSS AMERICA guitch Quilt Walk Festival. "Don't forget to pick up your "Patchwork Passport", map, and activity schedule at any byway activity site and get the six intrinsic qualities stamped as you stop and participate in various activities along the byway," said Dalton. Once, a person gets at least four of the six qualities stamped they can turn in their passport for an Inaugural Celebration Souvenir Button at byway information tents at Center and Main in both Parowan or Panguitch. Adults with stamped passports can enter a drawing for one of three Get-Away Vacations packages in Brian Head, Panguitch and Parowan, a quilt and other prizes. UTAH WOMEN GET HELP PREPARING FOR A HEALTHY PREGNANCY On June 21st & 22nd, the 6'5" Kevin Johnson will be making his way through Garfield County as he dedicates his Ride Across America to his Mother, Aunt Mo, both of his grandmothers, and his second mother Jackie Laskey. Each of these five had a battle with cancer. While his aunt and second mother would win their battle, he would lose both of his grandmothers. His Mother would also lose her long battle with breast cancer on May 20, 1999. This ride is about Kevin doing something meaningful with his life for them, since they have already gone above and beyond for him. Kevin states, "They have each given so much, that it's my turn to show them how much I appreciate the unconditional love they have shown to me." This ride will test Kevins' limits and push him to edge in both body and mind, which he is sure that the worst of his discomfort will fail to acquaint me with 1% of the pain they went through during chemotherapy. All my life he has wanted to do something to join the fight against breast cancer, and seeing that he didn't become a doctor, he figured he would do what he knows. Kevin knows fitness, and has a degree in marketing. His plan is to use what he has been given to make a real, measureable, difference. During the ride, Kevin will be wearing a pink ribbon cycling shirt with the names of his loved ones who have been affected by breast cancer. He will also leave space on his bicycle jersey for the name (or names) of anyone you know who has suffered with the destructive effects of cancer. The names of both those we've lost as well as the survivors. These spaces will be available on Kevin's jerseys with proceeds being donated to cancer research. Its time we end the battle with breast cancer forever. This is Kevin's small contribution to helping that happen. Lance Armstrong said, "If children have the ability to ignore all odds and percentages, then maybe we can all learn from them. When you think about it, what other choice is there but to hope? We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up, or fight like hell" I will fight like hell across America!
