Show May Page 204 the lAuGhiNg ,fr IN THE PERSONALS On a recent flight to the Baltimore, Washington, D.C. area I was reading an article about the Discovery Channel's Dirty Jobs host, Mike Rowe. Now, for those of you who watch Dirty Jobs, you know that there are some pretty nasty jobs out there. In this particular article, Rowe refers to a lot of people who have to work with crap or even in crap (for those of you who don't, be thankful, grateful, sing praises, whatever you need to do). Another thing Rowe refers to is people who have found a niche, something that no one else wants to do --like working with crap-- who are laughing all the way to the bank and in some cases have even become millionaires. Take for instance, as Rowe States, "...the guy I worked with on the show— who started washing windows by himself for food 15 years ago—now has 40 to 50 employees, a contract on every high rise in Honolulu, and is a multimillionaire. He started by looking at something that nobody else wanted to do." This brings me to you. What can you do that no one else wants to do? It could be something you're good at, have a passion for or something new all together. And it doesn't even have to be a dirty job like the ones' on Dirty Jobs. I used to watch The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch. I would truly walk away being inspired by the ideas and inventions people would come up with. And an idea or invention doesn't necessarily have to be a brand new one either. Take for instance this one woman. She never finished high school, was working at a McDonald's and was in her bedroom one day struggling with putting her dustruffle on her bottom mattress. And wallah, an idea came to her to create a dustruffle with a zipper and the rest is history including her becoming a millionaire. Now this column isn't about becoming a millionaire, but if you do, is that such a bad thing? I mean, think of all the good you could do with that kind of money. This is your time to think outside the box. Deutsch would frequently tell his viewers to look around their homes, anywhere actually, to think of how something could be made better or differently or even to think of something brand new altogether. I remember one time on his show his guest was the man who invented a skateboard called the RipStik. To say the least, the Rip- Stik became very popular –still today-- and this man became very wealthy. All from looking at a skateboard, an already existing idea, and making it better or at least making another version of it. ... [Find] a job nobody else wants to do, and then do it well, with a good attitude, with an entrepreneurial spirit," states Rowe. And have faith, belief in yourself and don't give up. The best part? It doesn't have to be craprelated. Cynthia Kimball Humphreys is a professional speaker and trainer through her company Every 1Counts, LLC. One day the Navy sent a crew of 20 men, while the Marines sent a crew of three. I would like to share with you my platform. Jobs- Every job in this county is important right now. If elected, I will work hard to insure that we retain the jobs we have. Job creation- I have proven in the private sector, that I have the ability to create jobs. If elected, I will use that experience wisely, in anyway I can, to create jobs in this county. An anonymous reader sent me these good ideas. The summer drink satisfies that terrible thirst we often get in hot weather. This little bit tartl drink could be made for much less than buying one from a fast food place. If you have one of those wand mixers or a blender, then it is simple to make. Lime cooler worth making: 2 scoops ice cream, 3 tablespoons of frozen lime concentrate, 2 cups of milk, garnish with mint leaves. Recipe called for green food coloring, which I would skip as food coloring doesn't have a very good reputation with health-food people. Food coloring can be used to stain nicks in counter tops, if you have the speckled kind easy to make just another "speck" unnoticeable. Save the syrup when serving canned fruit and use it in sauces, fruit drinks and dessert toppings. Just to drink it with the fruit might seem to be more sugar than you want at that time, but later mixed in something else could add a nice flavor along with the sweetener. For those of us into genealogy and lucky to find some old newspaper clipping that is worth keeping, here is an old recipe. Dissolve one tablet or two tablespoons liquid milk of magnesia to a quart of club soda, then mix well. In using a tablet, be sure it's dissolved. Let the solution chill for eight hours or so in the refrigerator. Next, pour it out into a shallow pan and soak the clipping in it for an hour. Remove the papers, place them between paper towels or other absorbent materials and carefully pat them as dry, or you can place on a flat surface and allow them to dry more fully. This treatment counteracts the acidity which caused the newspaper to yellow and become brittle. The paper will be preserved, lasting indefinitely -- as long as you can remember to repeat the process about every 50 years. Hummmm that might be a task hard to remember to do. Roads- This issue is extremely important to me. If elected, I will exhaust every effort to protect our access to our public lands. I know that this is a complicated issue, and I will be prepared to meet that challenge. 3. Education- Education is extremely important to me. I understand that as a commissioner there is very little I can do fiscally to help. However, this is what I can and will do if elected: I will continue to support the youth of this county. I will be involved in the activities of each school. All of our children deserve the best education available, regardless of which school they attend in the county. All of the schools in this county are equally important. Pre-register in person at the Panguitch City Offices or mail to: Panguitch City, P.O. Volunteer Services- Our volunteer forces within this county affect us in almost everything that we do. They need to know that they are appreciated and that their effort is very important to each community. If elected, I will make it a priority to make sure that their safety and their resources are protected. As an independent business owner for the past 25 years and counting, I have learned many things that I know will help me be a successful Commissioner, if elected.
