PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE When I arrived for my daughter’s parentteacher conference, the teacher seemed a bit flustered, especially when she started telling me that my little girl didn’t always pay attention in class and was sometimes a little flighty. “For example, she’ll do the wrong page in the workbook,” the teacher explained, “and I’ve even found her sitting at the wrong desk.” “I don’t understand,” I replied defensively. “Where could she have gotten that?” The teacher went on to reassure me that my daughter was still doing fine in school and was sweet and likable. Finally, after a pause, she added, “By the way, Mrs. Hallinan, our appointment is tomorrow.” WRITING HOME FROM COLLEGE One student fell into a cycle of classes, studying, working and sleeping. He didn’t realize how long he had neglected writing home until he received the following note: “Dear Son, Your mother and I enjoyed your last letter. Of course, we were much younger then, and more impressionable. Love, Dad.” THE BURGLAR THE DUEL A little boy came home from the playground with a bloody nose, black eye, and torn clothing. It was obvious he’d been in a bad fight and lost. While his father was patching him up, he asked his son what happened. v“Well, Dad,” said the boy, “I challenged Larry to a duel. And, you know, I gave him his choice of weapons.” “Uh-huh,” said the father, “that seems fair.” “I know, but I never thought he’d choose his big sister!” TRUTH A burglar alarm sent out its piercing wail in the dark of night in Brooklyn and the police arrived just in time to collar the burglar as he was leaving the premises with a big bag full of loot. Soon, he was in court facing a grim-looking judge. “Did you have an accomplice?” asked the judge. “What’s an accomplice?” the burglar replied. “A partner. In other words, did you commit this crime by yourself?” “What else?” demanded the culprit. “Who can get honest and reliable help these days?” “You seem to have more than the average share of intelligence for a man of your background,” sneered the lawyer at a witness on the stand. “If I wasn’t under oath, I’d return the compliment,” replied the witness. will settle and collect the dust. Sweep up. Potato starch - put finely grated potato in a pot of water. After 15 minutes, strain off potato and put the liquid into a bottle. Apply liquid only to the grease spot. To brighten unpolished wood furniture, wipe with cold tea. This brings out the grain and slightly darkens the wood. It has a tendency to make scratches less noticeable (didn’t say whether it was black or green tea) The book says mice don’t like the smell of peppermint. So it makes sense to grow peppermint around the house and to take leaves indoors and even spread a little of the peppermint oil around the house, (or on you). Peppermint is a good smell and has a calming effect. We know this because of what peppermint tea does for the stomach. I don’t know what mice make of it. I’m trying it because I still have trouble at our ranch with the little critters. So far (one week) so good. The lightning-caused Bridge Hollow Fire is burning on the Forest approximately 8 miles south/southwest of the community of Bryce Canyon City. The fire started on the afternoon of June 14. The fire is currently estimated at 11 acres in size. Fire crews from both Bryce Canyon National Park and the Dixie National Forest are managing the fire. The fire is burning in ponderosa pine and Douglas fir overstory and manzanita and pinyon-juniper understory. Much of the Douglas fir in the area is infested with mistletoe. “Currently the fire is being managed for resource benefits,” said Powell District Ranger Lori Wood. “Potential benefits include improved forest health and timber stand improvement. Other benefits include reducing fuel buildup in the area and mitigating future risks to firefighters and the public, both on the Forest and in the Park,” said Wood. Smoke from the fire may be visible from the East Fork Road. As with all fires on the Forest and Park, firefighter and public safety is the number one priority. No physical, natural, or cultural resource is worth a human life, and fire managers plan all activities accordingly. RESULTS OF PUZZLE FROM JUNE 11TH |
