Show IN OUR TOWN FYI PANGUITCH Well it’s almost July, when will summer ever get here. That was some rain storm we had on Wednesday, I got caught out in the hail and does it sting. I am up in SLC and they are getting rained on really hard and have been for the last two weeks now. Allen Henrie tells me that the farmers are waiting to cut their hay till it dries out, at least it hasn’t been cut. Farming is really tough, it’s either too wet or too dry, too cold or too hot, they really earn their money. My wife Pat, daughter Shawn and myself were in SLC to pick up our granddaughter Tèah, she has been in Mexico for the last six months learning the language. We are so glad to have her home again. On our way home she told us about her experiences, which were enough to fill a book. The Beemers (BMW) were here last weekend, and the Lions fed them breakfast, over 200 were there. The Fire Fighters had their deep pit barbecue dinner for them. The Beemers set up the tables and we have the kitchen for cleaning up, which really helps out. The BMW riders heavily contribute to Sub for Santa program, which is their main Chairity. This is their 10th year coming to Panguitch, one of the main honchos told me every year someone will say “why do we keep coming back to Panguitch” and the reply is, if you can find a place that is as accommodating, or has the rides that are available around Panguitch, then let us know and will go there, well, no one has ever come up with a better place, till they do we will be here. The BMW rid- Page 5 The Garfield County Insider June 25, 2009 By: Mack Oetting ers have rallies all over the country and many stay out all summer. The fun never stops, this weekend we will have the Panguitch Valley Balloon Rally. It starts June 26, and runs thru the 28. Friday will start out with a Media Balloon flight at 6:30 am, 30 + balloons. Vender and inflatable rides will be at Zions Bank, from 2pm to 7pm. On Saturday 35 balloons will be launched at 6:30 am. The Lions will have their “all you can eat breakfast” at 7:30 am to 10:30 am at Zions Bank. At the same time the Harley riders will also be here and their Biker’s rodeo will be behind the Court House on Friday at 4 pm. There will be a biker’s parade at 10:30 am on Main St. on Saturday. There will be many events on Saturday so check the ads around town. The GLOW, live music on Main Street and a GLOW dance will finish off Saturday. Also there will be Horse Races at the Fair Grounds, on Saturday, there will be a full race card and the concession stand will be open. The town will be crowded so come early to get good seats. Call Brady Eyer for anymore information. There is a whole lot of people in Panguitch that help make these events possible, thank you for all your efforts. The Care and Share opened up last Thursday and everything went really smooth. We are using plastic bags instead of boxes, and they are working very well, if you have any bags please bring them with you. The bags make it easy moving the food from our containers into your car, instead of the heavy boxes we were Powell Ranger District 2009 Kids Fishing Derby A Big Success using. Kelly Anderson, the Manager, wishes to thank all of the Volunteers that made the Grand Opening such a success. Attention all Garfield County Teachers. The School Board meeting that will be held tonight at Panguitch Elementary School, June 25, will be your current Association Presidents, Cheryl Lafever and Kaylynn Nielson last meeting. These two representatives have worked relentlessly on your behalf; they are smart and have represented you very well. I really enjoyed my time working with them and they are true professionals. This last meeting will address a very important benefit of yours and you need to come out and support them in this endeavor. Your new representatives will be Tammy Bennett and Debbie Polack. Debbie has been a long time advocate for the teachers over the years and Tammy will be a great addition, and will be a great help to the teachers association. No one though, can do much unless they have the support of the members. Keep the good news coming, Mack O. The rest can never be mastered. ~ Lord Robertson Give me golf clubs, fresh air and a beautiful partner, and you can keep the clubs and the fresh air. ~ Jack Benny The Powell Ranger District would like to thank all those who supported the annual kids fishing derby at Tropic Reservoir. This was the 4th year of the event and over 60 youth were in attendance. The event sponsored primarily by the U.S. Forest Service, with the support of local businesses, is held annually on Utah’s (Free fishing day), to promote getting more kids into the outdoors. Project coordinator Jake Schoppe said: We wanted to find a way to give something back to the community but I think we end up getting more out of it than the kids with all of their smiles. The event has been growing each year and is becoming an annual outing for many families as they repeat their trek to the woods to catch a fish. Once again, thanks to all who helped support the 2009 event. There is no similarity between golf and putting; they are two different games, one played in the air, and the other on the ground. ~ Ben Hogan Professional golf is the only sport where, if you win 20% of the time, you’re the best. ~ Jack Nicklaus The uglier a man’s legs are, the better he plays golf. According to a process spelled out by state law, repatriation is a collaboration between the Division of Indian Affairs and the Division of State History, assisted by leadership of the Department of Community and Culture. The first repatriation completed under state law demonstrates that state human remains laws do work. The Paiute tribe recently made a claim, and this claim was honored. In May, the skeletal remains of a small child were repatriated to the Paiute tribe. In accordance with state statute, the Antiquities Section of State History excavated the remains after they were discovered by a member of the public, eroding from an unstable sand dune. The Antiquities Section is also charged by law to determine cultural affiliation. Based on historical data, including historic artifacts found with the child, Antiquities made a determination, the child was buried roughly between 1860 and 1890 and the remains were likely Ute or Paiute. “Swift and smooth execution of the State NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act) law is crucial to the American Indian people of Utah,” said Forrest Cuch, director of the Division of Indian Affairs. “When human remains are disturbed, the tribes prefer that they be returned to the earth as soon as possible.” Philip F. Notarianni, director of the Division of State History, concurred. “Federal and state laws have been passed specifically in order to respect individuals and their modern relatives. For this reason, the Utah State Legislature recently addressed this issue.” AG MARKET NEWS Receipts: 802; Last Week : 530. Last Year: 461. GOVERNOR APPOINTS DEQ DIRECTOR Governor Huntsman has appointed Amanda Smith as the Executive Director of the Department of Environmental Quality. There was a national search conducted for the new director and Governor Huntsman selected Smith last week, advising the Senate of the appointment. Smith currently serves as Legislative Affairs Director for Governor Huntsman. “This department is critical to maintaining our State’s quality of life,” Governor Huntsman said. “Amanda has been a dedicated public servant, focused on maintaining and improving the only true legacy we have - our land, air and water. I am grateful to her willingness to serve in this important capacity.” Smith received her bachelors degree from the University of Utah and earned her juris doctorate from Gonzaga University School of Law. She previously worked as the government relations director for The Nature Conservancy. In her role in the Governor’s office, she has worked on critical issues like energy development, rural affairs, water and public lands. |
