Richardson: 208.529.0436 As many of you may already know, Tropic now boasts a fine arts gallery located in the former Coyote restaurant/gift shop at Clarke’s. A long time interest in art and photography by Wes and Ellen Clarke and the expertise of Irene Schack von Brockdorff have resulted in extensive renovations in the building to accommodate regional and out-of-state artists. On display in The Gallery at Clarke’s are plein air landscapes, abstract art, primitive pottery, sculpture and works by professional photographers. “Tropic’s high numbers of both domestic and foreign visitors warrant a fine arts gallery as an additional attraction to the area,” said Wes Clarke. Response to the gallery has been very positive, eliciting delight at the quality of art in what might be otherwise considered an outof-the-way rural area. Carol Sims of The Bee Publishing Company, an arts and antiques publication based in Connecticut, noted that Utah is garnering an increasing reputation as an arts oriented state. The spectacular scenery at every bend in the road and in every direction calls to the creativity in every artist working in all genres. It’s a difficult voice to ignore. The Gallery at Clarke’s currently showcases the paintings of Utah artists Valerie Orlemann, Brad Holt, Jan Perkins, John Huerta, Jr., Anne WeilerBrown, Carol Johansen, and Nancy Green, and the primitive pottery of Brigitte Delthony. Katharine Wipfler of Wyoming and Estelle Roberge, currently of New Mexico, are featured artists as well. (Some of the younger residents may remember Ms. Roberge having taught art in the schools in Tropic several years ago.) Fine art photography by Andrew Orlemann and Bob Hills, both of Utah, are included. In addition, we are proud to represent Jeff Wolf of Cedar City. His Western themed sculptures, both precast and bronzed, lend‘completeness’ with a truly American West flavor that enchants visitors. His most recent work, “Circle of Life”, will be on display in the gallery until November 1. This quarter-life-size precast clay sculpture depicts a cougar bringing down a mule deer buck; it stands 34” high and is 64” long, and will ultimately be cast in bronze. Workshops will be offered throughout the year. Jane Jones, author of “Classical Still Life Painting”, is scheduled to teach a five day class October 12-16. The subject is “Luminous Color with Underpainting & Glazing”. Information is available on the website, www.thegalleryatclarkes.com, or by stopping in at the gallery. Sculpture, watercolor and plein air workshops will be also be offered; information will be available at a later date for these classes. The gallery, located at 161 North Main Street in Tropic, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. DESERT DOCTOR FRIDAY HIGH: 80 LOW: 49 PARTLY CLOUDY MOTORCYCLE REPAIRS & PARTS SATURDAY 24 Hr.
