Online guestbook at www.maglebymortuary.com Every1Counts Live to Forgive; Forgive to Live By Cynthia Kimball Humphreys Grudges anyone? According to Lewis B. Smedes, “To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.” Prisoner? I never equated not forgiving someone with prisoner. Did you? But it makes sense. How many of us hold grudges? And how many of those grudges are founded? Are grudges founded? That would be a no. I believe that we can’t completely live until we truly forgive. If we become so consumed about what someone did to us or how they wronged us, what kind of life is that? It isn’t. That kind of consumption can take us away from our family, from reaching our goals, from loving, from our purpose in life. I’ve heard that when we don’t forgive it actually does us more harm. I believe that. Do you? We hear that not forgiving can bring about stress. We also hear that stress can bring about illness and disease. Do you see where I’m doing with this? Holding grudges can even bring about hate. Coretta Scott King said, “Hate is too great a burden to bear. It injures the hater more than it injures the hated.” And hate can lead to vices (now don’t get me started on those. That’ll be for another column). Personally, I think not forgiving someone can kill us. Spiritually, mentally, emotionally, psychologically, and physically. When we don’t forgive, our face wears it. So do our bodies. Let’s not forget what it does to our heart. James E. Faust has said, “If we can find forgiveness in our hearts for those who have caused us hurt or injury, we will rise to a higher level of self-esteem and well-being. More joy. Peace. Harmony. More happiness, too. And think about the example we set not to mention the teaching we do when we forgive. Just like Gary Ceran of Salt Lake City, who after attending a Christmas party with his entire family on Christmas Eve of 2006, lost a wife and two of his children after a drunk driver smashed into their car. The best part? Ceran forgave the drunk driver who now sits in jail. Could we do that? It gets better. Ceran visits this young man in jail. Could we do that? People are watching us. Whether we like it or not. Let’s learn to live to forgive, no matter what someone has done, intentionally or not, to us. Or, forgive to live. Either way you look at it it’s the same. But ultimately? You’re free. For information on coaching, consulting, speaking or training contact: Cynthia Kimball Humphreys, Vice President, Every1Counts, P.O. Box 574, Hatch, UT 84735.
