Show APRIL 26,2007 THE It Makes tone... By Veda Hale What's this little do-hinky? my granddaughter asked when helping me clean out some kitchen drawers. It was a piece of metal like a long "L". Awhile ago I wouldn't know either, but after a kitchen so-called helper put too many potato scraps down the disposal, I remembered how the men of the family fixed it by using that little do-hinky. I looked around and got it figured out just how, so now I have one more thing I can do....just in case. Yes, there are a few other things I have been paying attention to. I now know what to do if a breaker pops. And after I find the weak, easy to wiggle switch in the breaker box and reset it by holding it shut a few minutes and then releasing, I look around to see what I might have done to cause it to pop. Sometimes an overload can be easily corrected. Toilet overflows? Well, doesn't everyone know to reach back behind and turn that tap off? Maybe not. It is a scary thing to see water reaching the rim of the toilet. We have one in our new condo that seems connected someway to the others in the complex in a way that causes it to get an air lock. When this happens it doesn't overflow, it just doesn't empty all the way. Just doesn't give that last good gurgle. We found out that if we turn the valve off and dump a gallon or so of water in it that it somehow breaks that air lock. It is a bother, but at least it is livable. I figure each house, like most people, have a few LEGAL NOTICES NOTICE OF FINAL TAX SALE faults you just might as well learn to live with. I hardly want them to come in and dig up all the plumbing around here to fix it. Did you ever get one of those comeons that promises to tell you the big secret about the stock market? Someone "predicted the market right so many times." What if that is true but to do that the great predictor did something like what Bill Sones and Rich Spmes wrote about in the Deseret Morning News Thursday Feb 8 2007. Take a list of 1,024 investors and send them a letter on Monday. To 512 of them say stock will go up, to 512 of them it will go down. The following week to the group you predicted correctly you tell them a new prediction, half that it will go up, half that it will go down. And so on until you get at least one person who has watched you predict right every time. Then that person gets a letter asking for money for the next hit. One is likely to fall for it and send for the new "for-sure" information. And this kind of thing is legal? It takes a lot of watching of our pocketbook these days. Makes one want to throw most everything telling of a good thing in the trash. So, a few babies might get tossed out with the bathwater, as they say.
