Show JUNE 1,2006 Page 6 THE GARFIELD COUNTY INSIDER LEGAL NOTICES NEW FACES AT GSENM Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM) recently hired Field Station Managers for its new Kanab and Escalante Field Stations. Karen Weiss, a Bureau of Land Management veteran from Medford, Oregon, was picked for the Kanab Field Station Manager job; and Raymond (Rusty) Lee, formerly the Monument's supervisory land use planner, was hired for the Escalante position. Weiss can be reached at 435-6444360. Her office is located in the Monument Headquarters at 190 E. Center Street in Kanab. Lee's telephone number is 435-826-5601. His office is in the Escalante Interagency Center located at 755 W. Main Street in Escalante. According to Dave Wolf, GSENM manager, "The field stations were established as part of a Monument-wide realignment aimed at enhancing local customer service. We felt it was important to provide communities with a local contact - a manager - who could make decisions on normal day-to-day operations without having to come to the Monument headquarters for the okay. We're very pleased to have Karen and Rusty on the ground and working." Weiss came to Kanab from Oregon. She has a Masters degree in recreation administration from Chico State University in northern California (1990) and an undergraduate degree in environmental studies, with an emphasis in natural resources and parks, from Sonoma State University, also in northern California (1986). Weiss put herself through graduate college working as a graduate research assistant, teaching outdoor recreation classes and conducting research related to recreation and also, defensible wildfire space. In undergraduate school, Weiss worked as an initial attack firefighter on an engine crew for the California Department of Forestry. After undergraduate school, Weiss worked for the California Department of Parks and Recreation as a Park Ranger for two separate state parks (Samuel P. Taylor State Park and Jack London State Park in northern California) from 19861988. In 1990, after graduate school, Weiss began working foj the Prineville District Bureau of Land Management in central Oregon as an Outdoor Recreation Planner. Weiss spent four years in wild and scenic river management and four years as team lead for an environmental impact statement developing management direction for one of the fastest growing regions in the state (Bend, Oregon). In 1998, Weiss took a job with the Medford District Bureau of Land Man- agement as a Public Affairs Officer. As a member of the District Leadership Team, Weiss has worked on a number of challenging issues within the Northwest Forest Plan region and related to special designations (i.e. Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument and Rogue National Wild and Scenic River). At Medford, Weiss also worked as the Acting Rogue River Manager for one year and as an Acting Field Manager during the summer of 2005. In her spare time, Weiss enjoys working out, camping, hiking, gardening and reading. "I am very excited to take on new duties at the Grand StaircaseEscalante National Monument. I am looking forward to getting to know the people I will be working with and living in Kanab and being an active member of the community," said Weiss. Raymond Lee, or Rusty as he likes to be called, was born in Oak Ridge Tennessee, but has spent most of his life in the western United States, specifically Utah, Nevada, Colorado and California. He served on active duty with the U. S. Navy after receiving a degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in Physical Science. His Navy duties in- M~ t / eluded sea time in the Pacific, and work as an Intelligence Officer in Seoul, South Korea. Upon finishing his commitment to the Navy, he returned to college at the Colorado School of Mines, where he received a degree in Geological Engineering, followed by several years of graduate level training in Mining Engineering. Lee's introduction to the BLM was in Winnemucca, Nevada, where he started as a mining reclamation and compliance specialist. After five years, he transferred to the Forest Service in Utah, and worked on both the Ferron-Price and MoabMonticello Ranger Districts of the MantiLaSal National Forest. While his job title was Geologist, much of his work in Monti cello consisted of coordinating Forest transportation planning with San Juan County, local user groups, and other interest groups. He returned to Nevada and the BLM . at the Tonopah Field Station, where he served as the Field Station Planner. Lee was subsequently promoted to Supervisory Natural Resources Specialist, and was responsible for the BLM's Range, Wild Horse & Burro, Wildlife and Recreation programs in central Nevada. At the request of the Grand StaircaseEscalante Monument, Rusty came to Southern Utah in 2004 to assist in the ongoing Rangeland Health Environmental Impact Statement. His past experience in planning, along with the strong knowledge of grazing administration that he gained in Tonopah, made him an asset to that project.
