An Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held in Escalante on Oct 4 for Kaden Griffin, Timmy Hughes and Austin Rex. All three boys headed up outdoor projects to improve the city and high school. Kaden planned and oversaw the completion of a stairway from the parking area to the pilot's lounge at the Escalante Municipal Airport. Timmy worked to organize, paint and personalize the high school baseball dugouts. And Austin prepared a project with friends and UDOT to put down weed fabric and rock on an overgrown section of Main Street. They are the sons of Brent and Kathie Griffin, Sabrina and Greg Hughes and Jeff and Joette Marie Rex. Desert Dr. turned in his year-end report and wanted folks to know he's met people from 29 countries this year. Some he met on the road and some stopped by for a picture of his shop and "Wall of Fame". The only complaints he heard were from a man that got a speeding ticket and one that was upset the "Tasty Freeze" was closed. We've seen hundreds of motorcycles come through this past year and the foreign travelers will continue this summer (based on early reservations). We get e-mail from many of them asking for information on where they can stay, how to get around without using their motorcycles, and if certain places are open year-round. I think maybe Doc's right — "the whole world is waiting to come back". If you didn't get asked to purchase pizzas and breadsticks from Little Ceasar's as a fund raiser for the girl's basketball team, please consider dropping off a donation at the high school. They are actively working on getting enough funds to buy new warm-up suits. Your $5.00 would help greatly. Or see Brenda Smith at Canyon Country. We will have a girl's team this year. First home games - December 16th and December 22nd. JV at 5:15 Varsity at 7PM. The Stimulus tracker report came out a week ago. Utah was slated to receive $122.7 Billion Dollars for infrastructure. Garfield County was 4th from the last on the Utah list. Wayne, Piute and Kane County didn't receive anything. The $1.5 Million for Garfield went to extend the bike path. Seems like public safety, water and sewer grants would have been a better expenditure. The Slurry Seal for Hwy 89, two projects in Antimony and an ADA Ped Access somewhere in the county were on the wish list, but have received no funds as of this report. Great news from Franson Civil Engineers regarding Wide Hollow. He let me know that the draft EA is scheduled to be released Monday, November 23rd. A paper copy will be sent to Escalante City Library and anyone who previously provided comments to the project. A copy can also be downloaded from the Franson Civil Engineers website (www.fransoncivil.com ). Anyone who wants to comment on the project should give specific reasons for their support or opposition to the project. Simple statements of support or opposition will have no bearing on the approval or rejection unless specific reasons are provided. His parents are Brian and Trish Dixon. Trish is the Henderson's daughter. They also received word that another grandson, Jeremy Davis was called as second counselor in the Bishopric in the Bandy Virginia Ward. He is the son of Dan and Wendy Davis of Mesa Arizona. While they were up that way they paid a visit to Mary Carol Clark Izatt who is a sister to LaKay Quilter. They had a very nice visit. Anna Dunham received a package the other day and when she opened it she was delighted to see some placques and pins from Grandson J. J. Dunham. The pins were for her to wear with a shooting star on them. The pacques showed that J. J. had graduated from Basic Training. Anna has been nominated for the "Freedom Team Salute" commendation for support and sacrifice as an army parent. Congratulations to the family. In the hospital at this time are Eva Dean Francisco who had to have three surgeries last week to try and clear up the infection in her bones after she had fallen and broken them. Thelma Bybee who went to St. George to visit son Gary and his family and was having trouble breathing. Gary got worried and took her to the hospital where they decided she needed bypass surgery. A five bypass surgery in fact but she is now recovering after the scare. Bonnie Stewart McArthur will be getting transferred to the Huntsman Medical Center to try and help her further. We wish all of these folks a quick and speedy recovery and offer our prayers and love to them. They are all three in the Dixie Regional Medical Center right now. Released from their callings in the Primary were Walon Brinkerhoff and Dana Courtright. The Elder's Quorum was reorganized with Walong Brinkerhoff as President with first counselor Shawn Mortensen, second counselor Shiloh Syrett, and secretary Bodie Pollock. It was quoted today that if you feel love then express it and show it. Love is what makes our world a better place. That is a good thought. The towns Lighting Ceremonies will take place on December 1st. Henrieville with have a Primary Program and then the lights. Tropic will have a dinner and then the lighting ceremony will take place. Both towns start the celebrations right at 6:00 P.M. Welcome back to the area to Mike and Dixie Burbidge. They have come back home to us and we are happy about that. Their daughter and son-in-law and their children, Chad and Marcie Nell and children Ethan, Glade, and Sierra spoke in church today and did a great job. We are happy to have these families in our midst. Newlyweds, Richard and Phyllis Jones spoke in Cannonville today. We are so happy for this couple and their new life together. Tim and Chrishel Leech are here for the Thanksgiving holiday visiting with Rod and Kathern Syrett in Bryce Canyon City. Lula Moore who turned 90 this week was given a big party with fifty-one family and friends present to help her celebrate. They ate and talked and enjoyed the time together. In Panguitch this week they held a Multi-stake Youth Fireside that had around 350 in attendance from as far north as Junction, down to Hatch and over to Boulder. It was very entertaining and the youth were told about Living Their Values by a Dr. Holbrook. The Young Women in Henrieville held their evening in Excellence with the girls displaying talents and performing those talents for their parents and grandparents who were in attendance. Well our new mayors in all four towns are just settling into their jobs and we hope to have some news from them next week. Mrs Gayle Moore was excited to hear from Dustin Leslie who is in Montana serving a mission. He had met a man named Andy Watson, who for many years was the Pioneer Potter at the Capitol Reef Heritage Days for students who came to the celebration. He was good to work with the students and their teachers and some of his pottery is on display at Cove Fort as well. He told Dustin that he remembered Mrs. Moore. Dustin is the son of Bonnie Leslie of Henrieville. Some big changes are taking place across the street and we watch each day and for a long time all we could tell was they were moving dirt from one place on the site to another place. Well last week they finally put in some definable roads and are getting ready for construction. We don't know yet if it is going to be a strip mall or a motel but I sure hope it doesn't go over one story because we sure don't want to lose our view of Bryce Canyon. Sure wish someone would tell us what is going on and keep the dust to themselves. Well this year has just shot on by and now here we are at Thanksgiving time. There is so much to be grateful for in our lives even with the down turn in the economy we seem to be going along alright. The very fact that we breath clean air each day and can move around freely is a good start on being blessed. I personally am very grateful for my family and friends. The good Lord has been very good to me and mine. I personally want to tell each and everyone of you how grateful I am for your participation in this news column by submitting items to me. Some of you want to put news in but hold back so please take a minute and email or phone and let me have your news for this column. I even from time to time get news from people living in other areas who email me and tell about their lives and how much they miss us here. If you have something to say, say it in an email or on the phone. We welcome it. Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving and enjoys your day with your family - - I gitiweek. I I • • The High School students at Bryce Valley HS are practicing plays that will be coming up soon. Watch for them as David Pollock is working with them and word is that they are doing a great job. Can't wait. Our girls basketball team went to a tournament last week and in their first game they beat Meridian. Tyson Brinkerhoff is the coach of the girls team. We wish them a lot of good games this year. Go BVHS Basketball!! Layne LeFevre took the 11th and 12th graders to a Tech Career Fair at SUU last Thursday so they could see all the options out there in the world. Some Panguitch students are coming to Bryce Valley HS to demonstrate what a debate teams does. Coach Ryan Houston is bringing his debate time over so the students at Bryce Valley can learn how to form their own debate team. KayLynn Nielson will be the coach for the Bryce Valley team. Sounds very exciting and we wish them well. The Bryce Valley Elementary and seventh and eighth graders were treated to a visit from a Wild Bird Specialist, Martin Tyner of Cedar City. He taught them about the birds and even brought two or three live ones to show the students. He had a beautiful eagle along with other birds. Some of these students are going to be involved in a Christmas Bird Watch and Counting along with Bryce Canyon NP and the Audobon Society. Marily Bulkley of the BCNP put this program together and will be working with the students to get this count done, along with her assistant Sarah. This should be an exciting thing for the students to participate in and bring an awareness of the birds in our area. SENIOR CITIZEN MENU: The meals are not being done until the 1st of December.
