Show The Garfield County Insider Page 4 Explore Escalante IN OUR TOWN jana@exploreescalante.com The House and Senate Transportation Committees have been meeting and discussing changes/modifications to the Scenic Byway program. The Federal Highway Beautification Act authorizes States to provide information in the interest of the traveling public. Called the Tourist Oriented Directional Sign Program (TODS)- Tourist oriented directional signs provide motorists with business identification and directional information about businesses, including seasonal agricultural products, services and activities the major portion of whose income or visitors are derived during the normal business season from motorists not residing in the immediate area of the business or activity. These signs are limited to non-freeway type highways. John Holland, Scenic Byway Paid Director, indicated to me that UDOT is not interested in establishing such a program. We should ask the Senate Transportation Committee to ask UDOT to initiate such a program for the many off-highway tourist oriented businesses negatively impacted by the Scenic Byway designation. Escalante Rock Shop was one of the businesses used as an example when passing new legislation last session. Now that owner Susan Nelson is on the Scenic Byway Committee I hope she’ll use her position to push for a program. Stay Tuned. The footings have been dug, the rebar set and the concrete poured at Fire Station No 1. A temporary power box will go in and the beginnings of the electrical work and the stem walls will go up this week. It’s a shame three people called one of the funding agencies this past week and tried to get the project stopped. That’s as bad as one contractor turning in all the others because he can’t get work. Wonder why? I thought unprofessional conduct was a reason for a contractor to lose their license. Louise Barnes talked with someone at Garkane and voiced her annoyance over the tree trimming at the park. Garkane assured her that if one or all of the trees died they would replace them. With a bare root or a full grown boxed tree? I vote for the later. Maybe we should put all new trees in the Park Master Plan with Garkane as the funding source. Speaking of Park Master Plan, don’t miss the work meeting with the students of USUand Escalante City Council November 19th at 6:30 PM.at City Hall. The students have worked hard to provide a viable plan for these public facilities. Mayor Porter will be replaced with Mayor Taylor the first meeting in January, 2010. Councilor Dunn will continue for another 4 years and Councilor Torgersen will be sworn in. At that time there will be one seat available for appointment to replace Councilor Taylor. The mayor recommends and the council approves any replacements for vacant positions. We’ll see who steps forward. You’ll see Fire Chief Porter in the audience for the first time in 13 years. As William Shakespeare wrote in “As You Like It”: All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts. If your daughter or granddaughter is pregnant, you may wish to buy her an airline ticket to Ireland, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Japan, the Czech Republic or any one of 24 other countries. That suggestion came from a senior helpline caller, bringing to my attention the most recent report on infant mortality issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It states the United States ranks 30th in the world in infant mortality. The primary reason: premature births. One of every eight births in the United States is pre-term, compared to one of every 18 in Ireland and Finland. “If there is a ‘purgatory’ in the hereafter--and in my heart I believe there is,” she declared, “I am certain it is November 12, 2009 THE ELDERLAW FORUM - Professor Michael Myers occupied by large numbers ternational Federation of of gynecologists and hos- Obstetricians and Gynecolpital administrators.
