Show IN OUR TOWN FYI PANGUITCH Did you get your vegetable garden covered up, it was early for the first freeze. We have so many green houses around town, that isn’t quite as important as it was once was. Today is October 1st and it is the Panguitch, Flu shoot-out. It starts 12 noon to 6pm. It will be at the FIRE STATION (100 E. 40 N.) You can drive through, fill out the paper work and get your shot without leaving the car. The cost $25 (cash or check). There is no charge with your Medicare plan card, PEHP, Select Health, CHIP, or Medicaid cards, you must bring your card with you. This is a seasonal flu vaccine only, and it is recommended for the youth and seniors. Swine flu (H1N1) vaccine will be offered according to CDC guidelines as soon as it becomes available. Marilyn Twitchell who works at the Garfield School District, came up with a great idea. For years, old textbooks sat on the back dock, till they became so bad from the weather they were thrown out. Marilyn came up with an idea to put the books on Amazon .com for sale. She has had great success and has sold over $1,800 worth of books. She has put the money into the Garfield County School Foundation. This money can be used by the teachers or libraries, at $200 per request. The foundation was pretty depleted since the last board stopped me from contributing my health insurance money to the fund. Thank you so much Marilyn. Did you every wonder why there are so many generous people that live in Panguitch, well they start really young. Kathleen Cooper, the Elementary School Librarian, put on a fund raiser, called “MAKING A CHANGE”. They were raising money to buy books for the Sub for Santa program. Monday, pennies, Tuesday nickels, Wednesday dimes, Thursday quarters, Friday dollars. Many of kids got caught up in this effort to help the less fortunate than themselves; they were even bringing in their savings. Kathleen daughter took the change to be counted. She called her mother and was very excited they had over $600 in the coin count. The Students raised over $800! For every dollar the students raised, Scholastic Books donates a book for the Toys for Tots program. They also get $400 worth of books for their own school. One half of the $800 will go to buy books for the Sub for Santa program. WAY TO GO SOARING EAGLES YOU DID GOOD, BE PROUD OF YOUR EFFORTS. The official student count Page 5 The Garfield County Insider October 1, 2009 By: Mack Oetting will not be done until today, October 1st at the Elementary school, but the preliminary count is 280 students so far. This is up 30 from last year, and there are 34 students in kindergarten. The Senior Center hosted a volunteer luncheon, put on by the Iron County Seniors. They served roast beef and fed over one hundred volunteers and guests. Anna Pollock had 1111 hours, of volunteer time, more than everyone combined. Anna is a stalwart at the Thrift Store and is like the energize bunny, always on the move and making a difference. The Care and Share had a record day on Thursday, serving over 130 customers and had to stay open and extra hour to handle the crowd. Kelly Anderson (manager) is trying to figure out a way get the people out of the weather, its either too hot or too cold outside. The SLC Trib. had an article that said that food stamps use was up 51% over last year. The State is holding at 6% unemployment up from a low of 3% three years ago. The National level is at a 9%, so we are better off than most states. Zions Bank is having a food drive, when you go there to do business, please remember to bring in food donations with you. A number of the employees at the food bank will attend a conference this week to see what can be done to improve service and methods for getting more donations in the future. The Red Canyon bike trail is being extended beyond the 5 miles that runs through the Canyon. It looks like the length has been doubled and the finale destination will be Bryce Canyon. The trail extension is now being surfaced and should be ready to ride any day now. This is a beautiful ride, but it is uphill the whole way. Start at the top of the trail and you only have to pedal a couple of times to get to the bottom. This is a great ride, but the real plus is that it gets the bikes off the road. Every year we had EMT calls for someone injured on the highway in the Canyon, there are so many sightseers looking at the hills and not paying attention to anything else. I do not recall going on any bikers since the trail was put in. This would be a good time to get up on the mountains to see the Fall changes. The forests comes alive with their colors, it is my favorite time of the year, it is sad that it only lasts till the first big windstorm. This time of the year has become a good time for the tourist business, from the second week in September till the middle of October. We seem to get mostly adults and Europeans who don’t want to put up with the crowds, but spend more money, that families don’t always have. I enjoyed Jana’s column from Escalante last week. I met her at a 5 County meeting, when she was pursuing a grant for a fire station in Escalante. This was Escalante’s last chance for this grant and she hit a home run with her preparation and the vote was unanimous to give Escalante a new fire station. Jana’s statement about Janice Hatch was very astute, and right on all fronts. She said “the professionalism, knowledge of the issues and potential outcomes, status of the budget and general concern for the teachers and students by Supt. Hatch far exceeds anything I observed from the previous Supt”. I hope you don’t mind my printing your statement, Jana. Having served on the last school board all I can say is Amen. I like Jana’s reporting on the City Council meetings and will look into getting the minutes, also for the County Commissioners meeting and will incorporate them into this column. Keep the good stuff coming. Mack O. AG MARKET NEWS Receipts: 1,067; Last Week : 1,041. Last Year: 1,138. Feeder Steers: mixed but 1.00-2.00 lower, except 700750 lb wts 2.00-3.00 higher.
