Both surgeons have been performing gastric bypass surgery for the past three years in St. George and on October 20, 2006 began to offer the lap-band procedure as a part of Dixie Regional Medical Center's fully integrated bariatric program. Bariatric procedures refer to surgical options that induce weight loss in clinically obese persons. In gastric bypass surgery the stomach is altered to create a smaller stomach "pouch" which limits the amount of food in the stomach at any given time. This produces a feeling of fullness with small amounts of food and weight loss goals are more readily achieved. The lap-band procedure offers similar results and is much less invasive. A few small incisions are made in the abdomen and a small inflatable ring, or band, is fitted around the stomach using a laparoscope, an instrument allowing the surgeon to see into the abdomen. The band then controls the flow of food through the stomach in much the same way as traditional gastric bypass surgery. "The lap-band procedure has a much quicker recovery time because it is less invasive," said Cindy Richardson, Director of Surgical Services. "We have already seen great patient success with this procedure." Bariatric surgery has been shown to be an extremely effective treatment for the condition of clinical obesity which is on the rise. "Bariatric surgery, including the lap-band, is an effective tool that has been proven to help the clinically significant obese patient," said Dr. Speakman. "Often weight-loss diets fail for these patients and surgical options can help weight-loss efforts and bring about longterm weight loss. Bariatric surgery is effective in that it helps patients make healthy lifestyle changes, become more physically active, and resolve weight related health conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure and joint pain, as well as reduce the risks for heart attack and stroke." Dixie Regional Medical Center has a fully integrated bariatric program designed with the patient in mind. Accommodating beds and gowns are available and informational classes are offered free of charge. Monitoring and follow-up exams can be done close to home, and local support groups meet regularly. "DRMC has the facilities to make the bariatric patient comfortable before and after surgery," said Dr. Speakman. "We now have all the components for successful bariatric treatment right here in St. George." Everyone deserves a chance to enjoy good health and a longer life, conveniently close to home. To learn more about Dixie RegionaTs bariatric program, free community seminars are held the third Wednesday of each month from 6:30-7:30 PM at the River Road Campus. I overheard the couple at the next table discussing their bill. "Well Mary," said the man, "Near as I can figure, based of the price of the ham dinner you just ate', we got a hog back on the farm that's worth at least $137,000." SLEEP TALKING A wife and husband both talked in their sleep. She loved auctions; his hobby was golf. The other night, during a deep sleep, the man yelled, "Fore!" His wife, also in a deep sleep and not missing a beat, yelled back, "Four fifty!" : OIL ON FISH Students at school were asked to write about the harmful effects of oil on fish. One 11-year old wrote, "When my mom opened a tin of sardines last night it was full of oil and all the sardines were dead." HENRY FORD The fourth-grade class was studying the development of the auto industry. The teacher had emphasized the role played by Henry Ford, whose assembly lines decreased production costs. At the end of the unit, she gave a test including the question: "What did Henry Ford invent that made buying a car more affordable?" One of the students wrote: "0% financing." |
