A few years ago I would have given any odds that no one would ever hear me make a statement like this, but I have learned that age and health decreases the epectations and excitemnt of this event even when you are lucky on the draw and manage to fill your tag. After such a quiet first day weekend I was afraid the spirit of the hunt was dying and wondered if the shortened season was the cause but according to the hunters I have talked to, there were lots of hunters in the hills and many of them of them filled their tags. I use to make a trip through Little V alleys to check on the number of camps, but this year I did not do this; however, Steve Marshall who hunted in that area (and filled his tag) said there were lots of hunters in that area. Dick Haycock (Class of 1940) made his annual trip from Sacremento to the Horizon Lodge which has been his "deer camp" for several years. He was acompanied by his son, Jack, and Jack's two sons, Scott and Doug, and his daughter, Lisa. I am sorry to say that they are the only ones that I know of who did not get a deer. Dick did not come to hunt as he did not have a permit, but he comes evey year just to visit friends and and see the country where he herded sheep as a boy. The Haycock family had a ranch on Haycock Mountain hence it's name. Grandsons, Scott came down from BYU, Idaho and Doug from BYU, Provo, to join in the hunt and visit with Grandpa, Dad and sister. This was Lisa's first hunt and I have always felt that a first time hunter should be fortunate enough to get a deer. (My first one was a little two point and it would havefitinside the bigfivepoint my dad got upon Big Table, (between Antimony and Circleville) Lights were on at the Frank (Bluebird) and Ingra Richards (both deceased) home during the hunt as their two sons made their regular visit for the big event bringing with them most of their family members.
