Well, it is just a fact of life, and when we recognize that, we can set it up there on a shelf and tell it not to cloud the issues. But even when we do that, sometimes we'll still find ourselves weighing background. Yes, what kind of mother did this or that political candidate have? Once I started a scan of the Old Testament to see if something I'd noticed was true. When a king was righteous it mentioned his mother by name, when he was corrupt, it didn't. I didn't get through the Old Testament and maybe someWhere I Stand for Our Schools: whole one would complete the job for me, but Education is important for all children as far as I did get, it proved true. This one about borrowing. When I went to college she insisted I commit to a goal of never borrowing from my roommates, "Not even a postage stamp". Keep all the little details clear and you'll make good friends. So I remembered and my roommates and I decided up front to live that way. I still have good friends from those days. And you know what? I'd like my political servants to live those same rules. I'd like them to never take even a postage stamp for their own personal use. There are many other wise things I remember my mother teaching. So If I had some evidence that I was like my mother, then I'd have to say I'd vote for myself. Same is true when looking at other people. The job I'd hate worst in this world would to be to be a "political watchdog". When one comes in our midst, maybe we ought to be grateful and give him some appreciation. But then we might need a "watchdog" watcher, someone who would keep the watchdog from chewing up the good stuff. Oh dear! Does it ever end? Probably not. I'm still grateful I live where 1 can be part of the dilemma. I'll study the issues. I'll try not to choose someone just because of whose kid he is. But it might make sense to give our kids some good, simple teachings, in case they ever run for office. Send your hints and suggestions to V eda Hale, Box 956 Panguitch, Ut. 84759.
