So let's get to the bottom line. The best way-to do that is to "follow the money". What do Banks want you to do? Credit card companies are betting you are not disciplined enough to pay off the card each month, thus they ma^e {heir, whopping 14 to 17 or so percent. They act helpful and even magnanimous with incentives and kick backs, which feeds the little thing in our heads that can whisper, "You want it. Just put it on the credit card". Retailers will take credit cards, even though it costs them approximately 2.46%. Why? Because it is better-than a check. It is not their problem if you don't pay bank at end of month. Sure they would prefer cash, (Well, maybe not all the time, because then they are sitting ducks for robbers who might get to them before they get to the bank. Hummm. Good things about using a credit card include the fact that it is a sure-fire way to build up credit; and, as mentioned, Banks may offer perks in the form of cash back, airline miles, or other rewards. Credit cards may afford greater consumer protection since purchases are covered under the Fair Credit Billing Act. This allows you the option to withhold payment when you are dissatisfied with a purchase. If card is stolen, it is a relatively easy thing to stop a big liability with a phone call. Debit Cards....Who are they good for? Well, let's see. Retailers like them. Instant money, no bad checks, no fee to pay. (Oh, that's why employees are trained to ask and put the word "Debit" first so you might think that is the best.") Why are they good for banks? Banks may charge you a point-of-service (POS) fee every time you use your debit card, they don't have to have a reward program, and they don't have to function under the Fair Credit Billing Act, because it isn't mandatory. (At least MasterCard and Visa'have'extended their zero-liability protection to debit card users, this move was voluntary and is therefore subject to change.)
