FREE FOREST SERVICE EMPLOYEES AND VOLUNTEERS CLEAR CEDAR MOUNTAIN SKI TRAILS Thirteen volunteers braved cold weather on Oct. 28 to clear about three miles of cross-country ski trails near Navajo Lake east of here. The volunteers from the Dixie National Forest, Cedar Mountain Nordic Ski Club and Southern Utah University felled trees, cleared logs and brush, and installed or prepared sites for trail signs on a section of what will ultimately be a 12-mile ski trail system in Deer Valley. Deer Valley overlooks Navajo Lake, about 23 miles east of Cedar City along Utah State Highway 14. The volunteers succeeded in making all three miles of trail ready for the upcoming ski season. "We appreciate that so many people turned out to help clear the main loop of the trail system. We look forward to further development of what could be one of the best Nordic ski areas in the country," said Dorothy Uherka, president of the Cedar Mountain Nordic Ski Club. The members of the Cedar Mountain Nordic Ski Club are dedicated to improving cross-country skiing opportunities and experiences near Cedar City. They frequently collaborate with the Dixie National Forest and Cedar Breaks National Monument to develop and improve non-motorized trail systems and facilities. The club meets the second Wednesday of each month — including tomorrow, Nov. 8 — at 7 p.m. at the Mountain Shop, 1067 S. Main St. in Cedar City. All are welcome. For more information about the Cedar Mountain Nordic Ski Club, contact Uherka at (435) 867-4644 or dorothyuherka@infowest.com. For information about recreational opportunities on the Dixie National Forest's Cedar City Ranger District, call the district office at (435) 865-3200 or visit the forest's web site at www.fs.fed.us/r4/dixie. BENNETT THANKS RUMSFELD FOR SERVICE Senator Bob Bennett (R-Utah) issued the following statement following President Bush's announcement that Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld will resign after six years and Robert Gates, former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, will replace him. "It is not a surprise that Secretary Rumsfeld has decided to step down at this time. He has served for six years in a very demanding and tough position, and his sacrifice and service to our country, particularly as a key leader in the War on Terror, should be noted. "The president has made an excellent choice by nominating Robert Gates as the next defense secretary. I have met him and he certainly has the right background to succeed in this post. As a member of the Baker-Hamilton commission, he will bring a fresh perspective on how we move forward in Iraq, and I look forward to working with him on this and other important foreign policy issues," said Bennett. |
