Show UPTON TENDERS HIS HI TREASURER OF republican NATIONAL COMMITTEE TO LEAVE SERVICE republicans will name successor when national committee Is reorganized poor health Is reason cleveland 0 0 fred upham of chicago has hag decided to relinquish his place as treasurer of the republican national committee after a service of many years announcement of sir mr uphams uphama decision was made here after he had conferred with william M butler manager of president Coolid convention campaign and incoming chairman of the national committee there was no indication as to his probable successor mr upham has been in rather poor health for some months and has felt that his physical condition would not permit him to undertake the task of directing the financial affairs of tho the party in the coming campaign with the retirement of M mra r if upham P an entire new set of officials must be chosen when the national committee is reorganized besides chairman adams secretary george B lockwood also is to retire sir mr upham is offering himself for election as national committeeman from illinois by his state delegation at its meeting here monday he Is opposed by representative allen alien F more of illinois former senator sherman is the present committeeman and is not a candidate contests for seats in the convention brought by warring factions in in five southern states and the district of columbia came before the nation al committee upon its assembling here with all of the contestants pledged for president coolidge the question involved is one of the control of the he t state and district organizations the seating of entire delegations from georgia kind Mississippi 1 and tand the district of columbia was in dispute in both georgia and mississippi the contest was one in which the republican national committeeman found himself opposed by the organizations of the state chairmen the J L phillips lily white faction t ion in georgia opposing henry lincoln johnson and the daily organization in mississippi contesting the seating beating of delegates headed beaded by M J mulvihill the national committeeman four delegates at large were in involved in the arkansas contest while in in south carolina and tennessee scattering rival district delegations were laying claims to their legal election to the convention mrs florence porter of pasadena CRI cal will bo be among the four or five delegates seconding the nomination of president coolidge others will include former governor W W stickney of vermont and dr george E canon of new jersey |
