Plague outbreak strikes Bryce Canyon Syl vatic plague was recently found in prairie dogs at Bryce Canyon National Ben Morrill Agent Telegrapher Delta Phyllis Ferguson Clerk Salt Lake City Contract-Leas- e Park. Park Sup- erintendent. Bob Benton noted that although the occurrence of plague among prairie dogs is not an unusual event, he is advising park visitors to avoid contact with rodents while in the park. "Chipmunks and ground squirrels are known carriers of plague" remarked Benton, and I strongly that visitors suggest should not feed or touch any of these animals." Rodents, such as chipmunks and prairie dogs, serve as a reservoir for plague. The disease is spread bv fleas from infected animals. Plague first appeared in the western United States in 1900. Since that lime, it has been primarily a disease of wild animals. Only 100 cases of human plague have been recorded in the West during the past 20 years. |
