INDIAN TRAVELING TRUNK Under the direction of the Millard School District and the Title VI Indian Act. a Traveling Trunk" has been prepared for use in the Social Studies classes of the District. Mrs. Louise Bennett, the director, says that several classes used the materials already this year. The purpose of the trunk is to learn and appreciate the talents of the Indian people and to increase cultural awareness. Most recently. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Pikyavit. who are parent officers, have sold beautiful tanned skins to the project. These skins will be made into a Paiute Indian wedding dress by Madge Warner and will be loaned to the Pageant, the Legend of Chief Ka- - nosh. for use at the performances August 9, 10. and 11. Earl is especially skilled at preparing these deer hides and explains it takes four steps and very hard work as well as skill. Other articles in the trunk include various types of beaded leather work, sand paintings, jewelry, costumes, films, literature, charts, drums, model for hair dressings, dolls, etc. from various tribes. Of special note is a Baby Kahn (cradle) made by Mrs. Emily Pikyavit. Under the direction of Mrs. Gwen Hunter and the Indian art students, the trunk was beautifully decorated with Indian signs and pictures. The trunk is housed at the Millard School District office. It is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Utah, and is truly an education in government. Representing Unit 61 of the ALA (Fillmore) were the following: Lenore Hosman. Jacci McBride. Jerilyn Muhle-stciCheryl Petersen. Deanna Peterson. Janae Speakman. Geneal Starley. Julie Ann Richards, and Traci Tuttle. Election of city, county and State officials is carried out much as is done in real elections. At least four of our girls were elected to offices: Cheryl Commissioner: Petersen, County Traci Tuttle. County Recorder; Jacci McBride. City Council; Julie Ann RichGeneal ards. Platform Committee. Starley was nominated but not elected to a county office. The defendants were found "not guilty", but because of the pranks they had played on their friends, the judge ordered that their alarm clocks be set to go off every half hour that night. First we needed the people to support the program. then we needed to sell the program to the commissioners. The people have been great and the commissioners have been more cooperative than in any area in the state. The building is really a dream come true and can be used by other groups as well as the senior citizens. Watch for the dedication date!
