FILLMORE Reporter Marge Barton Photographer Compositor Reporter Jean Smith Photographer Display Ads by STELLA DAY Haven't things been quiet since the election? People seem to still be in a state o( shock over the results. No one hardly dared predict who would win the Presidency, as people in general were so undecided. The fact that Jimmy Carter, practically an unknown, won the election as President of United States four years ago, the voters thought anything could happen. But the fact that Ronald Reagan won the Presidency by such an astonishing maiority, so shocked everyone, even including Reagan and President Carter. Everyone is still wondering how it happened. Even the political analysts are at a loss to decide just what happened to make the election turn out the way it did. am far from being a political analyst, however in my opinion, the one most important event in President Carters defeat was his indecision in the handling of the Iranians taking over the U.S. Embassy and holding those employees as hostages for over a year, while the Iranian people hurled insults at the United States on every occasion. Now that the election is over, most of the people have gone back to screaming about the price of gas and how those Arab nations are ruining our economy by demanding such high prices for gas The fact is, we need many minerals besides gas before our economy will be anywhere near normal. We need iron, tin, cobalt, platinum, chromite, and many more minerals in order to manufacture cars, TVs, refrigerators, lockers, jet engines, and the many modern gadgets which are in every American household. All of these articles have now become necessary to our way of life, or so we think. Unless our inventors find substitutes for many of these "necessities", our way of life will have to be radically changed. When we stop to think about all of the electric helpers the housewife has today, we shudder to think of doing without all of these time savers (woman savers) and all of the electric tools and machinery which help our men do better work in half the time. Wouldn't it be terrible to go backward that far Even though it seems so hopeless now, it may even take a generation to get back to what was normal in our time. But science has a way of overcoming difficult tasks, and time has proved the fact that "necessity is the mother of invention". Once we have enjoyed our modern living, it will be very difficult to go back to the hard way of doing our work. Becuase am a Republican does not mean that am "naive" enough to think that suddenly inflation is over, unemployment will be remedied, everyone will have a good job and we will all live in luxury. An easy life is not conducive to progress, nor to bringing out the best qualities in all of us. I believe in earning our "daily bread" and knowing what it is to work for a good education, a comfortable home and a happy family. However, I believe it possible to be happy and have a beautiful life without so much luxury If we cultivate an appreciation for the beauties of nature which surrounds us each day, and make it a habit of being thankful for the many kindnesses that are shown to us by our family members, our friends and neighbors, and try to do some kind act many times a day, we will find so much happiness that life will be beautiful, even though we don't have very much ready cash. have a nephew who is a perfect example of a person getting happiness from the many beautiful things which surround him. He has earned his own living since he was 16 years old and has lived in some difficult places, but he has enjoyed every place he has lived because he is able to adjust and get the most from every situation. He and his wife are building their own home while living in it; however, they take time to enjoy picnics in the mountains and little trips to different interesting places. They both have tha ability to make you happy each time they visit you. and you are happier all the rest of the day after their visit is over. If this attitude doesn't come natural to us we can cultivate such an attitude by working at it each day. At least we will be happier for having tried to cultivate this attitude.
