Show Millard County Progress, Fillmore, Utah 84631 Friday, August 10, 1979 Page 2 MILLARD COUNTY PROGRESS USPS 446740 Our Town L Published Every Friday at Fillmore, Utah 84631 By Progress Printing Company Susan FILLMORE kr STELLA reviewed many hundreds of scrapbooks and finally decided on three entries, one from Michigan, one from North Dakota and the one from Fillmore. Utah. The committee based in Washington. D.C.. sent a telegram to Mayor Howard Johns that Fillmore was one of three winners but we would have to come to the Convention in Washington. D.C.. to receive the award lor being one of the w inners, but we would not know whether we had received First. Second, or Third Place until the last night of the Convention. The banquet was held in the large ballroom of the Statler Hilton Hold with hundreds of people attending, since there were many divisions of Cleanest Towns acioidiug lo the population of the (own or city. As Fillmore was the first- - town in Utah to ever receive anv such award, the national committee invited both senators from Utah and their wives as well as the two representatives and their wives. Aunt Nell Huntsman flew with me to Washington. D.C., to help receive the award. Dr. A. Blaine Huntsman. Superintendent of the Los Altos High Schools, had a convention in Washington D.C. near that time, therefore he flew in early in order to attend that important occasion, and his son Dr. A. Blaine Huntsman Jr. was getting his Doctors Degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and traveled to Washington D.C. to help us celebrate this outstanding event. Clearfield. Utah, won an Award of Distinction, and two school teachers. Mrs. Kenneth Gardner and Mrs. George Allen attended the convention to receive Clearfields award. My cousins. Laurence and Vera Huntsman, lived in Washington, D.C. and took time off from their work to attend the convention with us. This made sixteen at our table, and each of us was keyed up to high pitch" not knowing whether we would be first, second, or third place winner. When North Dakota won third place, we breathed a sigh of relief as now we only had Michigan to conquer. You can imagine the roar from our table when it was announced that Michigan won second place, as we knew then that we were first place winners. I remember every detail of our walk from the table to the big stage to receive the trophy. from Utah The senators and representatives accompanied me. and kissed me on the cheek when the trophy was presented to me. They said Fillmore had done a good job in advertising the type of people who reside in our state. We took the opportunity to curctully examine all of the winning scrapbooks to get pointers on how to report a town project, since this 1965 scrapbook was our very first. The ones we have made since then arc more complete and have more colored pictures in them. We also cover each page with plastic covers now. which protects the pictures from getting finger maiks and tom edges. Each picture has a typewritten explanation of the imvortnncc it has toward the completion of our projects. It is very necessary that we have pictures of the project before any work was done, otherwise one would never guess how weedy and seedy and full of trash the project was before we began our cleanup of the location. Fillmore has won several thousands of dollars in cash prizes, as well as many trophies, and since I take the pictures, furnish the scrapbooks and the plastic stivers besides making the scrapbooks, I have kept them all at my home except one which the Fine Arts Guild paid me for making, and they have that one in their files at the City Library. They also have a scrapbook on Ans and Crafts made by Edith Callistcr. Gwen Hunter and Annette Day which won them a State Award from the Utah Federation of Womens Clubs. These scrapbooks arc really history books telling of the activities of the citizens of Fillmore. Most of them have the picture of the Mayor. City Council, and City Recorder in the front of the book. I always request such a picture but many times one or two of the City Council members will be absent when the picture was taken. They think their picture is not important, but in 25 or more years from now their grandchildren would point to that picture with pride. Foui teen years have already passed since our first scrapbook was made. Wc won awards before that time, but sciapbooks were not required, just written desciiptions ol the project and generally judges were sent hcic to pcisouully inspect the entry. I hope each lamily is getting their yards clean, as well as their stieets well groomed, for the visit of the Salt Lake 1 ibune judges the week of August 13. We Thank You All W.
