Show Friday, November I, Ernest J Hanson, Salem. Oregon, and Kimberly Rae Fischer, also of Salem, were married in the Manti Temple October 25, 3, - STELLA DAY We were asked very recently how this column originated, which took me back twenty-eigh- t Howard Johns had just been elected years. Mayor of Fillmore for the First time. The Salt Lake Tribune and the Utah Associated Garden Clubs announced a State Beautification Program the year previous as one of the State Centennial projects, the Utah State University and the Utah Nurserymens Association did not become until ten years later.) Fillmore and Delta tied for first place in the State for the planting of our rose gardens. Mayor Johns said, The publicity Fillmore received from that project is worth thousands of dollars to Fillmore and we must take advantage of it. He asked me if I would be Chairman of Civic Beautification with no salary, but use a group such as the Garden Club to get the projects comVance Wilson pleted. Mayor Johns added, suggests that you write an article for the Progress every time you do some public work and mention names, as this will help get volunteers for your work." At first there was only an article occasionally, and there was no particular title, but, as time went on, we received many letters telling us how much the former residents enjoyed hearing about the volunteers and their accomplishments. The articles began to appear more frequently and for the last fourteen years I never missed a week of having Fillmore, Our Town in the Progress. At first, most of the members of the Garden Club did the major part of the volunteer work, and many of those members still belong to the Garden Club, such as Gene and Lillian McBride, Neldon and Dolores Brunson, Dallin and Cathryn Nielsen, Noble and Lila Day, Lawrence and Lulu Peterson. Fdith Callister, Iicnc Cooper, Roy and Arlene Olpin. Lona Huntsman. Jack Brunson, Joyce Scottern. Patsy Iverson, and Daisy Rogers. Nellie Huntsman w as one of the charter members and still belonged when she recently passed away. Jane Wilson has always belonged and helped us greatly with publicity. Her sister, Helen Rogers, was president of the Kanosh Garden Club and joined our club when she and O.J. moved to Fillmore. Rose Rogers has also been a faithful member through the years. Some of the members are not strong enough to work on sonic of the civic projects. However, they do many other activities which help to make for a strong Garden Club, and we do appreciate their efforts. Since, as National Chairman of different Committees in The National Coucil of State Garden Clubs, I traveled all over the United States and even to foreign countries, saw at first hand the accomplishments of the different Garden Clubs and other groups. Dr. Arvil Stark, State Horticulturist for the Utah State University, urged me to tell about these projects in order to help the residents of our rural areas in completing new projects. Thus the column took on a broader area of interest. Every time I decide I wont write an article this week, I receive a letter, or someone phones me to tell me how much they enjoyed my column, and I decide I will write at least one more time. Geneva Speakman is responsible for this weeks column; in fact, she has given me courage many times in my life, and I am sincerely grateful for such a precious friend. also received a letter from Kent Blevcns. a cousin of Vernon Peterson, Helen Starley, and Colecn Davies, and a nephew of George and Thelma Peterson, who lives in California, but visits in Utah. He said he subscribes to the Progress and enjoys reading nty column. This summer he and ms wife toured many states, but found no park anywhere which was more beautiful than our New North Paik. which has been developed by the citizens, with help from every group in OUR TOWN. He enclosed a copy of a letter he has written to the Utah Travel Bureau suggesting that they advertise this area more than they have done in the past. OlR TOWN has many thoughtful, hard wotk-ingroups who do many worthwhile profits. For instance, the Laurels and Explorers, under the direction of Connie Bennett, cleaned and groomed the yards and surrouding area of the Clark Huntsman home and we compliment them for such a commendable project. 1 he open tall weather has made it possible to do many proievts which might have been put ofl until spring, but, by doing them now. we will have more time in the spring to do some ol the planting and remodeling we have been putting oil until vve have mote i 1 Michele ll ing and Douglas Hhateott ticipated in girl's competitive sports.
