East Eightmile chain and seed By Rick Rey nolds For the past two months the USDA Forest Service has been conducting a chaining project in Fast Eightmile, just north of Holden. The chaining consists of two caterpillar tractors ging a 230 ft. Ely chain, An Ely chin is made by welding actions of rail to an anchor chain, Th's chain is very effective in nppmg up sagebrush and teaching dow n juniper, The site has been chained completely in one direction and tnen aerial seeded. It was seeded at 10 lbs. per acre. The seed mixture included pubescent, intermediate, and crested wheatgrass along with bitter brush, diffrose, and ladak D-- drag-hom- e 8 alfalfa. The area is again being chained, this time in the opposite direction. This will give a better kill on remaining juniper and sagebrush and help cover the seed for germination. The purpose of the chaining is to increase forage production for wildlife and livestock. This will directly effect permittees from Oak City, Holden, and Scipio whose livestock will be using these improved range lands. The Forest Service will be issuing free use permits for firewood and posts on the downed trees in the chained area. These permits may be obtained from the Forest Service Office, 390 South Main, Fillmore. Utah. New power plants sites cal customers." Utah Power and Light Co. officials Friday asked the Department of Interior to prcquality seven potential power sites for the future use of UPAL customers. In a morning presentation given to Interior officials, Frank N. The sites are (1) Emery in Utah, (2) Naughton in southwestern Wyoming. (3) Soda Springs in Idaho, (4) Ncphi in Utah. (5) Delta in Utah. (6) Wellington in Utah, and (7) Green River in Utah. Davis, UPAL vice president, said his company had conducted comprehensive power plant site studies within its service area evaluating air quality, land and water ecology, and sociological, aesthetics and cultural effects of potential generating plants. He said eighteen sites were evaluated at substantial cost, and seven sites were identified as essential for the future power plants "necessary to satisfy UPAL electri Mr. Davis asked that appropriate government agencies "take timely steps which will prequalify those sites they agree arc suitable for future power plant construction. Based upon this prcqualification, UPAL," he said, " will then make plans to develop the sites in a sequence most beneficial to those who will be served, while minimizing environmental effects."
