She explained that the efforts are continuing towards locating and hiring a teacher tor this position. One other suggestion by the Superintendent was that if these efforts fail, die District could pos- H-Ro- sibly hire a student teacher from BYU or Utah State. Tintic High School Principal, Gordon Grimstead, is exploring other avenues to fill this position. During last mondi's Tintic Board of Education meeting. Superintendent reported on die individual school's action plans for reading. She said that after die May 30, 31 reading How to grow tomatoes Now that the weather is cooperating somewhat, your garden soil should be warm enough to keep your tomato plants happy. The whole tree may develop symptoms. but frequently the leaves on one side of die tree or on a few branches turn brown. The tree will not die from leaf scorch unless its water supply is seriously deficient. In Utah, symptoms of leaf scorch usually begin to show up July and August. Newly transplanted trees also may develop leaf scorch because they have not had die time to establish a good mot system. Trees widi damaged roots (from construction, for example), or growing in areas surrounded by pavement also have difficulty in obtaining sufficient water, and leaf scorch results. Similar leaf symptoms often can be caused by excess salts in die soil which are taken into die plant and moved out into die leaves. Over fertilization and leaching of mad salts applied during die winter also can make soil high in salts. in The best control for leaf scorch is to prevent conditions which usually create die problem. Deep irrigation during periods of drought andor high temperatures is essential, especially during windy periods. Keep trees vigorous with proper fertilization in sping or late fall, and prevent injury to die roots and trunks from construction, lawn mowers, or girdling mots. The removal of a few branches by judicious pruning will reduce the water demands and consequently reduce leaf scorch. days, teachers had met in their individual schools, to discuss student needs and how to best teach reading concepts to improve student test scores. Superintendent reminded the Board that while reading scores overall were higher, math scores had declined in some areas. The Board discussed reasons and implications of the low math scores. The Board agreed that while reading is the crux of a student's education, other subjects such as math skills are equally as important. Superintendent said administrators and teachers will be looking at ways to make sure students are receiving the best possible math instruction at both elementary and high school levels. Superintendent reported that all sdiools have formed their trust lands committee. The committees are comprised of parent and staff councils. This is one requirement of tlie State Trust Lands pmgram. Superintendent said this is a good way to also have parent involvement in the schools. The schools have all turned in their site based plan and each school will receive funding from the State Trust Lands to support the school plans. The council formed must have an equal number of parents to staff members and there parents are pulled from outside of the parent school employees. Health note Kids may suffer a double negative effect if they drink caffeinated soft drinks instead of milk. Milk contains die calcium necessary for strong bones, but caffeine reduces calcium in the body. By the time they become teenagers, the kids may have poor bone density and their bones could be as weak as an elderly person's. Dairy products are the best food sources of calcium because they also contain vitamin D, which helps die body absorb calcium. Payson Lakes - Stocked.
