Part Betty Robinson group tours Iceland by Betty N. Robinson On day live. Wed. July 10. we arc Hying again. This time a one hour flight to Akurcyri. the largest city in northern Iceland. It is located at the base of a fjord and has an excellent harbour and good communications. It is only 50 miles from the Arctic Circle, hut enjoys mild temperatures and weather. Our tour guide showed us a hook of photographs taken three years ago when they experienced one of the worst winters in their history. When I looked at them, I thought. "Gee. these look just about like liurcka when they have a had snowstorm. " Ordinarily Akurcyri and Reykjavik both have very mild winters with not much snow. Warm ocean eurrenls arc what does it. On the way to Ijke Myvatn in the north, we saw a variety of natural phciinmina. rich bird life, varied flora, extensive lava formations. lava caves, traces of recent volcanic activity, colorful geothermal fields and beautiful Lake Myvatn itself. This area is a favorite holiday spot for Prince Phillip of Great Britain, lie goes there for the favorable Bird Watching and fishing. We saw the modest accomodations in which he slays while visiting (here. On our return to the airport. we first toured around Akurcyri. Some of the oldest homes and buildings in Iceland arc located here. They have been restored to their original state and arc still in use today. The tallest trees in Iceland arc located here; however. there arc no native trees in Iceland, as we know them. They arc brought in from Alaska and transplanted here. Akurcyri has the same quaint colorful old world type houses, hut on the outskirts of the city where there is new growth, it resembles our own U.S. communities. On day six. Thursday. July . we left Reykjavik for a (our of Thingvcllir National Park. Its a geological site and the most historic in Iceland. Licalcd by Like Thingvallcvain. (he largest lake on the island, it is the site of the oldest parliament in the world. It was founded on (his location in AD930, and is still active. The beautiful canyon running through the park is in the Ling Rift Valley, the meeting point of the North Atlantic Plate and the Lurasian Plate. In some places it is very wide, in others it is quite narrow. Here the earth is separating about 2cm a year. Some of us were nervous while we were there, perhaps feeling the island 1 1 might separate any moment and swallow us up. Prom there, we traveled on to Gulllfoss (foss means waterfall). Golden Falls and the Great Gey-si- r I lot Spring area, where Strok kur. Icelands Old Faithful, spouts steam and hot water almost on cue. This area reminds me of Yellowstone National Park in the United States. On through scenic mountains, vast farmlaiids and the highland plateau, to the communil of where we were llveragerdi. lodged at the Hotel Ork. This small village has harnessed geothermal power to permit a greenhouse industry with fruit, vegetables. and exotic plants nourishing under glass. d Iceland is only about the size of Utah and its roads arc very narrow. Ring Road circles the island on the outside edge. This road plus the streets of the larger communities near Reykjavik and in Reykjavik arc all paved. The other roads arc all graveled. When the roads were paved to better serve the tourists, the materials used were too heavy and the tarmac collapsed causing the entire area to sink. On day seven. Friday.
