Control Program On Spruce Bug Is Now Completed Completion of the fall spruce bark beetle control program on the Mantl-L&SNational Forest was announced today by Forest Supervisor George L. Burnett. These tree killing beetles are attacking spruce trees on about 2,000 acres of private, State, and national forest lands in the Dark Canyon area of the LaSal Mountains near Moab, Utah. A total of 3,521 trees, stumps and logs were treated this fall. This makes a total of 8,300 infested trees that have been treated in this area during the past two years. The infested trees, stumps and logs are either treated with a chemical that kills the insects or they are burned. Studies have shown that the chemical spray applied to the trees will kill the beetles without harming animals or humans. As many trees as possible are also removed from the woods and cut into lumber. al Apprixomately 2ft million board feet of timber have been removed from the area under this control program'. Technical Information on control of this insect was supplied by entomologists from the Intermountain Forest and Range Experiment Station and the control program was carried out by District Ranger John K.
