Show It makes them cry, but they just keep right on working! Despite "buckets full of tears" during the past several years, Dr. Wilford M. Hess and Dr. Darrell J. Weber of Brigham Young University are continuing as a team investigating the nature of a toxin associated with the onion pink root disease. The professors of botany have just received a $34,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to continue their study of toxins that destroy so much of the nation's onion crop. Similar grants the past several years have helped the the investigate pair ultrastructural changes in relation to the infest ion process. The name pink root occurs because the fungus produces a red pigment when it has affected the onion roots. During the past two years, the scientists have been concentrating on the nature of the toxin produced by the fungus. They came to this conclusion after observing under an electron miscrosope that onions cells which are treated with exudate from the fungus were disrupted and the niclei were destroyed. This, the bontanists added, showed that a substance which was secreted by the fungus was capable of destroying cells even when the fungus was not present. The USDA developed an interest in their research project because of the potential for the development of resistant plants to the fungus which would be very useful in onion plant breeding programs. The two botanists have proposed to the USDA that plant breeders use the toxin in screening to procedures determine which of their genetic varieties of onions are resistant to the toxin produced by the onion pink root fungus. Preliminary studies indicated that this should be feasible, and this resulted in the grant from g the USDA to develop the The assay. project will last for two years or longer and will involve biochemical investigations and characterization of the toxin as well as the practical application of the toxin to the onion variety testing for plant breeding programs. rapid-screenin- To be clean and neat is very important to the white-foote- d mouse; when not asleep or eating, it is busy washing, combing and grooming itself. A general 20 percent increase in pensions was voted in June, and a number of special benefits were approved in legislation enacted on October 17, just prior to the adjournment cf Congress. Already known internationally for their onion research, the two have pooled their specialities in investigating fungus spores. Dr. Hess has special training in the use of the electron miscroscope and in the techniques for preparing freeze-etchin- g samples for the microscope. Dr. Weber in has training and has in skills biochemistry the use of gas chromatography, mass spectometry, amino acid analysis, spectrophotometric methods, and radio isotope techniques. Q) Is it true that corrections are being performed during returns processing at Internal Revenue Service Centers? A) Yes The Internal Revenue Service has initiated a program to correct unallowable items identified on returns during processing. If your return contains an unallowable item you will receive a letter of explanation from the Service Center. However, if you feel you have a legitimate claim to the deduction, you may either submit additional information by mail or request that your return be transferred to your district office for an interview. You do not have to agree to the proposed correction without a hearing. Q) When must I pay the balance of my 1972 estimated tax?
