Show DISASTER IN WYOMING COLLIERY TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN MINERS KILLED carelessness of miner causes an ex on wh ch br sorrow to many homes and great loss to property the visit of a miner into a con demudd entry in mine NO 1 of the union pacific coal company at hanna wyoming on tuesday resulted in an explosion which caused the death of men the partial destruction ol 01 the mine workings by fire and the worst mine horror in the history of wyom ing flag at 10 25 0 clock tuesday morn ipg lpg a miner walked into a condemned en try of the colliery the instant the accumulated gases came in contact with his lamp a tearful fearful explosion oc burred over two hundred men ware wre at work at t the time and of this number all perished extent ea about twenty five fire followed the explosion and the d smoke which poured from the pits mouth was mas so dense that tha attempt at rescue by the surface men had to be abandoned for the time being at noon superintendent brooks and a rescue party forced their way into the mine the dense smoke rendered their progress ex difficult as well as dangerous and several of the escue party were overcome and were sent to the surface at I 1 clock the rescuers reached he interior workings and on the third level found several miners bad ly mangled but living and a short distance further the dead bodies of several others those among the living who were able to talk said that the men who were at worl further in on this level were undoubtedly dead the number being eing placed at over rawlins and laramie were at once notified of the disaster and appeals for help were made to aid in ing the flames and for surgeons and nurses to care for any injured that might be rescued the scenes at the mine were heart rend rond ng wives and children of men me n who are known to have been inside eagerly hang about the shaft kept only by cooler heads from plunging into the dark abyss the union pacific railroad which owns own the mines has all of its extra employees working with might and main to reach the imprisoned men the flames seem to be abating and there is hope of getting most of the bodies out by morning the hanna mines are among the best on the TJ U P system having been established in 1878 the town was named for senator marl hanna as he was a member of the union pacific coal company mine no 1 is practically a new property it has twenty six entries fifteen miles of workings and a main incline shaft of one and one half miles in length the mine has been lecog nihed as a dangerous property for some time on account of the large amount of gas but the system of ven ti lation has been so good that an ac aident was not anticipated two h indred and eighty two men went down in the mine at 7 0 clock and only forty eight havel have been ac counted for of this number two are dead it was some time after the explosion occurred that the first man was brought to the surface he was followed by others until 1 0 clock when the last were brought out the res cuers auers were unable to penetrate fur ther into the mine until additional openings had been made to permit fresh air to reach the lor lo 10 er levels anil and clear away the foul gases |
