Preliminary sampling of soils in the area have shown elevated cortceritrationsTif lead in both residential and mining areas. The EPA is concerned about the possible impact to human health, especially for children, from exposure to lead from the mine tailings in the area. The EPA is coordinating with local government officials for a public meeting on August 10, at 7 p.m. at the Memorial Building. At this meeting, officials from the local, state and federal government will explain the plans for soil sampling and discuss future steps that may need to be taken to prevent exposure to heavy metals. Hie meeting will also provide an opportunity for the jwblic to ask questions and provide comment. In historic mining areas ac tivities often resulted in the release of naturally occuring heavy metals into the environment. Residents who come into contact with contaminated areas may be exposed through the soil, water or air. Excessive exposure to certain heavy metals such as lead may be a very serious problem for sensitive populations such as pregnant women, infants and young children and would need to be addressed. The EPA's plans to do more sampling of soils in the area is to gain a better understanding of the extent of the problem. In order to sample private property, EPA must have the property owner's permission. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) will be helping EPA by making a map of the area. The EPA will only sample the soil where owners have given permission by signing a form allowing EPA to have access to the property.
