Alcatraz was constructed to house only the most hardened criminals. How could a young orphan whose only crime was to steal five bucks froma rural country store post office end up in such a place? That's exactly what happened to Henri Young but "Murder in the First isn't so much about how he ended up in Alcatraz, it's the shocking story of what happened to him while there. Henri, played by Kevin Bacon, survives an infamous escape atempt in the late 30' s and as punishment spends over three years in solitary confinement. Naked and totally alone in an undergound cell only five feet high he endures unspeakable conditions that include sadistic beatings from the assistant warden played by Gary Oldman. When he finally emerges from this living hell, Henri is phisically a wreck and barely clings to sanity. Hours after rejoining the general prison population he sees the man believed to be responsible for putting him in solitary and kills him with two hundred inmates and assorted guards as witnesses. Realizing that this is based on a true story, the opening scenes of "Murder in the First" are very painful to watch. The brutality and human degradation. . . interwoven with views of everyday life for the guards and their families produces contrasts so stark that I imtally felt as if my emotions were being manipulated. It's easy to forgive these early excesses however, when the details of this tragic story begin to unfold. Kevin Bacon delivers a performance that makes you heart ache. Gary Olman, as warden Glenn is absolutely chilling as Young's tormentor and serves as a reminder that "crimes against humanity" in the 1930's were not exclusive to Nazi Germany. Christian Slater's character, James Stemphill, at first has all the charm of an over anxious puppy... but the relationship that developes between convict and attorney and the courtroom drama that follows is facinating to watch as Slater's Character really come to life.
