CONOVER MRS. GRACE BERNINI Editor Healthy lawns provide benefits If youve been looking at your grass witlL"lawning eyes," youre not alone: Americans treasure their turf. Some 100 million of us push or ride 61 million mowers over 25 million acres of lawns each week to keep them neat and clean. That works out to about one billion hours spent on lawn care every year, said Larry Sagers, Utah State University Extension horticulturist. There is a payback for all of this time, expense, and work, according to Sagers. Lawns make good play areas for children and adults. They are the least expensive groudeover to install and maintain. They provide security zones to keep burglars, insects and rodents away, ble from other plants. Here are some lawn growing tips he gives. Pay attention to detail. This kind of attention makes the difference between a healthy, weed-fre- e lawn and one requiring constant attention and expense. Dont mow low. Mow at 2 12 to 3 inches. Keep grass loose by coring aeration. Close the hatch on thatch. Let clippings fall where they may. Its recycling that conserves your lawn and energy. Fertilize moderately. Three or four times a year is generally adequate. Be grass wise: work smartnot harder. Common sense er, lawn care should be the watch word. We can always be sure that she has all the girls best interests at heart (in our Jr. Class). We get to bake cookies, go on hikes, make really neat crafts, and she is always extra nice to each girl: She always sets a good example. She is pretty and dresses very neat. She teaches us to be nice to everyone and to be good citizens by getting involved. We would like to say a big "THANK YOU!" to Shard Jones for being such a great Troop Leader and Example Setter.
