The typical cold will last from three to five days, although some may linger abit longer. Symptoms are best relieved by giving your body what it most craves -rest. Drink lots of liquids to prevent dehydration and to soothe sore throats. Decongestants can help relieve congestion, and nose drops ease stuffiness. Pain relief for children should never include aspirin, which is associated with Reye syndrome, a potentially fatal brain disorder. The best protection against flu is early inoculation. Flu sufferers who are elderly, who smoke or are chronically ill can be vulnerable to pneumonia. This severe lung infection is the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. If you develop a cough that gets worse instead of better, shortness of breath, or a dull, achy pain in your chest, see your doctor. GRACE BERNNI months is out of question, be or for both of the one prepared - colds maladies season's dreaded and flu. With over 200 viruses causing the common cold, all of which are easily picked up by unsuspecting bystanders, this is one illness that can come any time of the year. The reason more people seem to catch colds in the winter months is simply because more people are kept indoors by inclement weather. Crowded shopping malls, theatres and classrooms provide more opportunity to come into close contact with a cold sufferer and his or her virus. As for cases of flu, they seem to occur primarily between Thanksgiving and Easter each year. While a cold will generally give you a couple days warning that something is going on - feeling sluggish or a mild sore throat - flu hits you out ofthe blue. One minute you feel fine and the next hour you're suffering from a fever, chills and body-ache- s. To decrease your chances of catching a cold or flu, try to stay out of crowds. Wash hands frequently with soap and try to avoid touching your face, mouth, or nose.
