Show veteran of civil war passed away on sunday harry B benton tor for twentysix twenty six years a resident ot of this city died on sunday evening his death came quite suddenly and was a severe blow to his wife and to their many friends mr benton had been suffering with a severe cold and while a phy asician had been called in his condl tion was not thought to be serious on sunday he was apparently better than he had been for or a couple or three days but late in the evening he was stricken falling to the floor while mrs benton was assisting him to a couch he passed away before the physician arrived and it Is thought that death waa was directly duel due to an attack of heart trouble harry B benton was born in pittsburg pa 71 years ago last sep he was but in the days of the civil war but he ran away and enlisted as a drummer boy and went into the great conflict along with the volunteers from his state after the end pf jut the war he came west working in various states and finally settling in colorado where be he took aup up X mill work on his arrival in jintil in 1891 he work ed as a mill man and in recent years he haa has followed mining being an employee of the godiva mining corn pany at the time ot of his death harry B benton while ot of a ing disposition was a citizen ot of which any community might have been proud having a reputation tor for honesty and fairness in all transact eions during his residence here he made many warm friends and retain ed them by hia his cheerful disposition his ilia death Is a distinct loss to eu vu reka the deceased has no near relatives aside from his wife and an adopted daughter mrs fred shontz a tor for mer resident of eureka whose home Is now at spokane washington mrs shontz came to eureka for the fun eral era the funeral funeral services were ere conducted at the odd fellows hall in this city on thursday afternoon the caremon les 1 at the hall and also at the grave in the city cemetery being under the auspices of eureka lodge no 12 of which the deceased was a member an appropriate eulogy was delta ered by dr E J howell and some splendid musical numbers were also rendered the musical end of the services including numbers by a quartette composed of frank bees ley frank morley william 0 settle and george brewster and also a solo by frank beesley miss helen bees ley m as the accompanist tor for the sing ing the pall bearers were members of eureka lodge no 12 and old time friends of mr benton they were william B mitchell william tite tits W F john morley al moore and william homer |
