Show A6 The Emery County Review, Tuesday, December 23, 2008 Volunteers Help Rehabilitate Preserve After Fire In partnership with The Nature Conservancy, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has finished vegetative rehabilitation of the Scott M. Matheson Wetlands Preserve, which was charred by a humancaused fire in late October, killing more than 400 acres of vegetation. One month after the fire, a crew of UDWR and TNC personnel and public volunteers assembled and spent a day hand-planting over 1,000 cottonwood saplings. In early December, the UDWR contracted an aerial seed applicator to broadcast a diverse mixture of grass and plant seeds over the burned acreage. Immediately following the seeding, the UDWR put revegetation equipment on the ground to level burnt tamarisk stumps and roughen the soil for improved seed germination. Now that tree planting, aerial seeding and mechanical treatments are done, the UDWR is opening the north end to public visitation. The south end of the preserve, including The Nature Conservancy trails and trailhead remain closed for continued restoration and rebuilding of the boardwalk and bird blind that were lost in the fire.
